No. 1 UCLA’s Pitchers Shove in Wins Over Northwestern, Texas A&M

February 25, 2023 | Softball

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The No. 1 UCLA softball team rode the arms of Brooke Yanez and Taylor Tinsley to victories over No. 19 Northwestern, 2-1, and Texas A&M, 3-0, on day three at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday.

Game 1: UCLA 2, Northwestern 1
Yanez, who picked up her fifth win of the season for the Bruins (17-0), allowed just two hits and struck out five Wildcats (4-6). After allowing a leadoff single to begin the game, Yanez retired 19 consecutive batters until she allowed a solo home run with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Yanez quickly bounced back by striking out the last batter of the game.

All three runs in the game were scored via the longball. UCLA freshmen Megan Grant and Jordan Woolery each hit solo home runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively.

Woolery was a total 3-for-3 in the game and 5-for-6 across both games today.

Game 2: UCLA 3, Texas A&M 0
Tinsley went the distance versus the Aggies (11-4), notching her second complete-game shutout of the season. She finished the game with eight strikeouts.

Tinsley got herself out of two jams in the fifth and seventh innings. Twice, Texas A&M's first two batter reached base, putting a runner in scoring position with no outs.

In the fifth, Tinsley struck out two of the three batters. And in the seventh, she induced three straight fly outs. The first out was made by a sliding Kelli Godin in left field which saved at least one runner from scoring.

The Bruins tallied all three of their runs in the fourth. Lauren Hatch scored from second on a muffed catch by the Aggies attempting to get a force out at second base. A bunt base hit by Kennedy Powell and a subsequent throwing error by Texas A&M pitcher Emiley Kennedy allowed pinch runner Janelle Meoño to score from second.

Ramsey Suarez knocked in UCLA's final run of the inning with an RBI jam shot into right field.
