No. 3 UCLA Sweeps Two in Battle for Los Angeles

LOS ANGELESย -- No. 3 UCLA (11-1) posted a pair of 5-0 sweeps without dropping a set on Saturday in the Battle for Los Angelesย at Mapes Beach. The Bruins opened with a 5-0 sweep of Cal Poly (2-9) at 10 a.m. PT and then followed that with a 5-0 sweep of No. 6 Grand Canyon (7-3) at 2:00 p.m. PT.

In the first dual against the Mustangs, the Bruins went 10-0 in sets, recording their seventh 5-0 sweep of the season, while improving to 11-0 all-time against Cal Poly.

The Bruins went up 1-0 on court two when graduate student Abby Van Winkle and junior Peri Brennan took down CP's Jayelin Lombard and Piper Naess, 21-18, 21-8. The Bruin duo improved to 4-0 on the year, all on court two.

UCLA put another point on the board when senior Rileigh Powers and graduate student Haley Hallgren defeated the Mustangs' Emma Zuffelato and Kalee Graff on court four, 21-11, 23-21.

Sophomore Sophie Moore and junior Tessa Van Winkleย teamed upย to clinch the dual on court three with an easy 21-11, 21-1 win over Delaney Peranich and Julia Soeller. The Bruin duo improved to 7-0 on the year, all on court three.

Sophomore Natalie Myszkowskiย paired up with graduate student Kelli Greene-Agnew to put the Bruins up 4-0 with a 21-14, 21-15 win on court five over Cal Poly's Margo Smith and Susie Lloyd.

Senior Lexy Denaburg and freshman Maggie Boyd posted a 24-22, 21-13 win over the Mustangs' Piper Ferch and Izzy Martinez on court one to complete the 5-0 sweep.

Graduate students Jaden Whitmarsh and Marlie Monserez defeated CP's Marina Warren and Jenna Drobeck, 21-13, 21-8, in exhibition play on court six.

In the second dual against Grand Canyon, the Bruins went 10-0 in sets, recording their eighth 5-0 sweep of the season, while improving to 6-0 all-time against GCU.

Powers and Hallgren put the Bruins on the board first with a win on court four over GCU'sย Dana Roskic and Jessica Drake, 21-16, 21-19. The Bruin duo improved to 11-0 on the year (6-0 on court four and 5-0 on court five).

The Bruins' got a boost when Jessie Smith returned to the lineup from an undisclosed injury. The sophomore teamed up with Abby Van Winkle to post a 21-14, 21-17 win on court two over the Lopes' Samaya Morin and Abbie Hughes. The duo improved to 2-2 on the year, all on court two.

Greene-Agnew and Myszkowki clinched the dual on court five when they defeated Grand Canyon's Cami Sanchez (former UCLA Bruin) and Mackenzie Harris, 21-15, 21-12.ย The Bruin duo improved to 3-1 on the year (2-0 on court five and 1-1 on court four).

Boyd and Denaburgย put UCLA up 4-0 with a 21-17, 21-11 win on court one over the Lopes' Allanisย Navas and Allison Hansen. The duo improved to 9-0 on the year, all on court one.

Brennan and Tessa Van Winkle completed the 5-0 sweep with a win on court three over GCU's Krista Rowan and Anaya Evans, 21-18, 21-13. The Bruin duo improved to 3-1 on the year, all on court three.

Whitmarsh and Monserez defeated Grand Canyon's Kamilah Checani and Sarah Dickson, 21-12, 21-8, in exhibition play on court six.

The Bruins return to action tomorrow when they conclude play inย the Battle for Los Angelesย at Mapes Beach. UCLA will open with No. 16 Long Beach Stateย at 10 a.m. and conclude with No. 13 Florida Atlantic at 2:00 p.m..
