No. 2 Bruins Take Series with 10-1 Mercy-Rule Win
March 12, 2023 | Softball
BERKELEY, Calif. – Maya Brady went 2-for-4 with a homer and four runs batted in, helping the No. 2 UCLA softball team to a 10-1 mercy-rule victory over California at Levine-Fricke Field on Sunday.
The Bruins (25-2, 2-1 Pac-12) totaled 14 hits, including two home runs, to take the series rubber match.
After being shutout by the Golden Bears (18-6, 1-2 Pac-12) yesterday, UCLA put runs up on the board in the very first inning today thanks to a two-run home run by freshman Megan Grant. Grant's blast into the right field parking lot marked her fourth homer of the season. She is now tied for the team lead and Pac-12 lead with Brady for runs batted in with 32. Grant also ranks first among freshmen in the country in the statistical category.
Left-handed pitcher Brooke Yanez secured her ninth win of the season in a complete-game effort with seven strikeouts. The Golden Bears' only run came in the first inning when Yanez, who entered the game with eight walks on the season, walked four of the first five batters she faced.
UCLA tacked on two more runs in the second. Junior Lauryn Carter picked up her first extra-base hit of the year with a double into the right-center gap to get things started, and a single by Kennedy Powell moved Carter over to third. Brady came through with her first RBI base hit of the day with a single into center field.
Pola pushed across another run with an infield single to first base. Chaos ensued on the basepaths when Brady ran towards third base which was already occupied by Powell. Powell then made a mad dash to home, and with a head-first slide, evaded the California catcher's tag to stretch the Bruins' lead to 4-1.
Powell continued the UCLA's balanced offensive attack in the fifth inning with a perfectly executed drag bunt that pushed a runner into scoring position. With two runners on, Brady blasted her team-leading eighth home run of the season with another shot into the right field parking lot. Brady leads the team with a .924 slugging percentage and .481 batting average heading into the second week of conference play.
UCLA put the mercy rule into effect with three more runs in the top of the sixth. Palacios connected for her third base hit of the day to leadoff the frame. Two consecutive throwing errors by the Golden Bears' infield pushed Palacios across. Another throwing error, this time by the California catcher attempting to throw out Janelle Meoño on a steal, allowed for another run to score.
The Bruins are back home next week to host Syracuse on Tuesday, March 14 at 7 p.m. (PT). The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
