UCLA Wraps Up Regular Season With 82-73 Win Over Arizona

March 04, 2023 | Men's Basketball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ UCLA seniors Tyger Campbell, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and David Singleton led No. 4-ranked UCLA past No. 8-ranked Arizona, 82-73, before a sold-out crowd of 13,659 in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Saturday night.
ย
The trio of seniors combined for 60 of UCLA's 82 points in what marked the final regular-season contest for both schools. Jaquez Jr. recorded his seventh double-double of the season, totaling 22 points and 10 rebounds.
ย
Campbell finished with 21 points and Singleton had 17.
ย
Jaylen Clark totaled 11 points and four steals in just over 15 minutes, exiting the game midway through the second half with a lower right leg injury.
ย
UCLA (27-4, 18-2 Pac-12) extended its winning streak to 10 straight games and capped its first perfect home record (at 17-0), since concluding the 2006-07 campaign with a 16-0 mark at home. In addition, the Bruins pushed their home winning streak to a nation-leading 25 games.
ย
The Bruins took advantage of a 15-0 scoring run over a three-minute span in the first half, erasing a 23-14 deficit and securing a 29-23 cushion. UCLA led Arizona at halftime by a 40-37 margin, thanks to 12 first-half points from Singleton and 11 from Campbell.
ย
"Look, we don't worry about making shots," said Mick Cronin, The Michael Price Family UCLA Men's Head Basketball Coach. "We worry about taking good ones. Winners know what to focus on. We focus on effort, defense, playing the game plan, rebounding and getting open shots. Eventually, they're going to go in."
ย
UCLA scored the first eight points of the first half to surge ahead, 48-37.
ย
All five of UCLA's seniors were honored in pregame festivities as part of "Senior Night" in Pauley Pavilion. In addition, those five players all earned the start โ€“ Campbell, Jaquez Jr., Singleton, Kenneth Nwuba and Russell Stong.
ย
The Bruins got off to a slow start against Arizona (25-6, 14-6 Pac-12), missing 12 of their first 13 shot attempts. Arizona raced to a 13-2 lead in the game's first five-plus minutes. The Wildcats maintained a 15-4 lead at the 13:55 mark in the opening half before UCLA used a 13-8 run to close the gap to 23-17, after a 3-point basket by Singleton with 8:57 to play.
ย
UCLA continued to erase the deficit, scoring the next 12 points. The Bruins led by a 29-23 margin with just five minutes left in the first half after Campbell made a pair of free throws and Singleton connected on another 3-pointer.
ย
After opening the second half with an 8-0 run, the Bruins gave up five consecutive points. Arizona trimmed the Bruins' lead to six points, at 48-42.
ย
An old-fashioned 3-point play by Adem Bona helped push UCLA's advantage to nine points (53-44), and the Bruins finished an 8-0 scoring run with a Jaquez Jr. 3-point pay that not only put the Bruins on top by 14 points (at 61-47), but sent Arizona's leading scorer, Azuolas Tubelis, to the bench with his fourth foul.
ย
Tubelis finished Saturday night's game with a team-leading 24 points and 10 rebounds. He was one of four Arizona players to have scored in double figures.

The Bruins have secured the No. 1 seed in next week's Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas. The conference's top four teams have earned a first-round bye โ€“ No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Arizona, No. 3 USC and No. 4 Oregon.
ย
UCLA's first game in the Pac-12 Tournament will take place against either the No. 8 or No. 9-seeded team on Thursday, March 9, at 12 p.m. (PT). No. 8-seed Washington will face No. 9-seed Colorado in a first-round matchup in Las Vegas on Wednesday at 12 p.m. (PT).
