UCLA Sweeps Rival Arizona for the Second Week in a Row
The Bruins swept their third straight Pac-12 opponent against then-No. 24 Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. last week. Faraimo earned the win in all three games to improve her record to 22-2.
Game 1 (W, 8-0): UCLA homered three times, the first of which was a three-run shot by freshman Kennedy Powell in the second inning for the first home run of her career. Also leaving the yard were Maya Brady and Aaliyah Jordan.
Game 2 (W, 8-4): Sharlize Palacios hit a go-ahead three-run home run to highlight a five-run, seventh-inning rally, leading the Bruins to a comeback victory. Jordan knocked in the game-tying run with a single up the middle.
Game 3 (W, 14-5): The Bruins' bats exploded for a season-high five home runs, including two from freshman Megan Grant who logged her first career grand slam and first multi-homer performance for a total of five RBI. Palacios pounded UCLA's first home run on another three-run blast in the first inning.

USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Finalists
Redshirt junior utility Maya Brady and redshirt senior pitcher Megan Faraimo were selected as USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 25 Finalists, the organization announced earlier this week on Wednesday. The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award is considered the most prestigious honor in Division I women's collegiate softball.
ย
This marks Faraimo's third consecutive season being named a Top 25 Finalist for the award. She was also a Top 10 Finalist as a redshirt sophomore in 2021. This is Brady's first time being recognized as a finalist after being named to the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List in the 2021, 2022 and 2023 preseasons.
ย
Two Bruins have taken home the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award a total of three times. Rachel Garcia (2017-21) was honored in back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019 and Stacey Nuveman (1997, 1999, 2001-02) won UCLA's first award in 2002.
ย
Megantron
Faraimo, who has hauled in four Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week awards this season, set a career-long scoreless inning streak of 35.2 innings last week that was snapped in game three against Arizona. Over her last eight appearances, Faraimo sports an 8-0 record with 45 strikeouts and 0.37 earned run average.
ย
The Oceanside, Calif. native picked up her 20th win of the season in game one at Arizona on April 14, achieving the feat a full month earlier than she did in her 2022 campaign. The last time a Bruin pitcher won 30 games in a single season was Ally Carda in (2012-15) in 2015 (32-8).
ย
Brady in the Hunt for the Triple Crown
This season, Maya Brady leads the Pac-12 in batting average (.444), home runs (15) and slugging percentage (.905) and is in the hunt for the conference triple crown, ranking second in runs batted in (49). Brady trails Arizona's Allie Skaggs in RBI by eight (57). Brady has been the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week twice this season (April 17 and Feb. 13).
ย
Bashin' Bruins
UCLA has now homered in seven straight games thanks to Palacios' solo shot against Long Beach State this Wednesday.ย  The Bruins have totaled 17 home runs across that span. UCLA has homered multiple times in six of those seven games.
ย
Tinsley at LBSU
Taylor Tinsley took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning in UCLA's 10-0 mercy-rule win over Long Beach State on Wednesday.
ย
Ooh, That's a Fresh Note
Megan Grant's 47 runs batted in and Jordan Woolery's 41 runs batted in have made UCLA freshman class history. They are the only true freshmen in Bruins' history to each have recorded at least 37+ RBI in a single season. Their 88 combined RBI are tied for the second most by a freshman duo in a single season. The 88 RBI also leads all freshman duos in the country (second is Indiana's Taryn Kern and Avery Parker with 86 RBI).
ย
Since softball was adopted by the NCAA, only four freshmen have led UCLA in runs batted in for a single season: Stephany LaRosa (2012, 61 RBI), Stacey Nuveman in (1997, 71 RBI), Janice Parks (1986, 19 RBI) and Chris Olivie (1985, 12 RBI).
ย
Ooh, That's Another Fresh Note
Grant (47 RBI) and Woolery (41 RBI) rank second and third, respectively, among all freshmen in the nation in runs batted in. Including Maya Brady's 49 RBI this season, the trio of UCLA sluggers ranks second, third and fifth in the Pac-12 in RBI entering week 11 of the 2023 season.
ย
During Pac-12 Play
ยท Maya Brady, Megan Grant and Jordan Woolery rank first, second and third in HR with eight, seven and six, respectively.
ยท Maya Brady and Megan Grant rank first and second in RBI with 20 and 19, respectively.
ยท Megan Grant and Maya Brady rank first and second in slugging percentage at .904 and .887, respectively.
ยท Brady and Grant are tied with five home runs to lead the Pac-12 in conference-only competition.
ย
Brady Joins Bates
Last week, Maya Brady homered in each of UCLA's three games against Arizona to stretch her streak to four straight games with a dinger. She is the first Bruin to accomplish that feat since B.B. Bates did so in five straight games in February 2013.
ย
Big Cat Hunter
Brady has dominated in her 10 career games against UCLA rival Arizona. Lifetime against the Wildcats, Brady is batting for a .517 average (15-for-29) and 1.310 slugging percentage with six home runs, five doubles and 12 RBI.
ย
Chef Batting Leadoff? That's Scary
Grant has bat leadoff in each of UCLA's last eight games and leads the team with 12 hits, 12 runs scored and four home runs in that span. In the leadoff role, Grant is batting for a .414 average and a .931 slugging percentage.
ย
Approaching 1,000
Megan Faraimo is 52 strikeouts away from becoming just the third player in UCLA history to record 1,000 strikeouts in a career. In the 1,000 K club are Anjelica Selden (1,441 SO; 2005-08) and Keira Goerl (1,095 SO; 2001-04).
ย
The Bottom of the Lineup Producing
One of the biggest reasons for Megan Grant's RBI production is that the bottom of the lineup has been consistently getting on base. Over UCLA's last 12 games, the Bruins' 7-8-9 batters are hitting a collective .363 batting average and .451 on-base percentage. In conference games, Anna Vines ranks second on the team with a .406 batting average (13-for-32).
ย
Player of the Year Watch: Brady
Maya Brady paces UCLA in batting average (.444), home runs (15), runs batted in (49) and slugging percentage (.905). She is one of just three players in the country with at least a .440 batting average, 15 home runs and 45 runs batted in (Clemson โ€“ Valerie Cagle, Marshall โ€“ Autumn Owen).
ย
Brady has three multi-homer games so far this season (San Diego - Feb. 12; Fresno State - March 3; Washington - March 19), stretching her career total to five. She joins a pantheon of Bruin sluggers, becoming just the seventh player in program history to record at least five multi-homer games in their career.
ย
Single-Season Records Watch for Brady
Maya Brady (.908 SLG) is on pace to have the best single-season slugging percentage by a Bruin since Megan Langenfeld when she set the UCLA record with a 1.085 mark in 2010. No Bruin has slugged over .900 since that season. Brady is also on pace for the first 20-homer season by a Bruin since Stephany LaRosa and Delaney Spaulding in 2015.
ย
The Queen is Back
Aaliyah Jordan has not skipped a beat since making her return to the lineup after a year-long recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The Chula Vista, Calif. native leads UCLA with a .433 average over its last 14 games since her return.
ย
Jordan was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the second time in her career following her first home games in over a year against Stanford last week. She helped the Bruins to a top-10 sweep with a team-leading .571 batting average, two home runs, 1.429 slugging percentage, 10 total bases and three RBI.
ย
Jordan is a two-time NFCA First Team All-American, three-time All-Pac-12 First Team selection and is one of four remaining members from UCLA's 2019 NCAA Championship squad.
ย
200 Career RBI
With her two-run homer in game two against Stanford on April 1, Aaliyah Jordan became the sixth player in UCLA history to record 200 runs batted in for a career. Jordan, who has 206 career RBI, trails Tairia Mims Flowers and Stephany LaRosa for third on the all-time list.
ย
Shar Charred That Ball
Catcher Sharlize Palacios has now homered in three straight games. At Arizona, she hit back-to-back three-run bombs in her final at-bat of game two and first at-bat of game three.
ย
Back to Her Roots
Maya Brady has undertaken a new position this season as the Bruins' everyday shortstop following a left shoulder injury sustained by utility Seneca Curo. Brady grew up playing the position with her travel ball team OC Batbusters Stith.
ย
Brady Shatters 24-Year-Old Record
Maya Brady broke a 24-year-old record during UCLA's Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. Brady recorded 11 consecutive base hits across four games, breaking the mark of 10 consecutive hits formerly held by UCLA legends Lisa Fernandez (March 1993) and Stacey Nuveman (Feb. 1999). In total, Brady opened the first week of 2023 going 13-for-16 with 13 RBI and four home runs to earn her NFCA Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career.
ย
Chef Megan Cookin'
Megan Grant is riding a 17-game reached base streak. She just saw her 14-game hitting streak come to an end in game in UCLA's midweek game at Long Beach State on Wednesday. It was the longest hitting streak by a UCLA freshman since Briana Perez's 21-game hitting streak in 2018.
ย
More on the UCLA Freshmen, Because Why Not
Jordan Woolery is in a six-way tie for the Pac-12 lead in doubles with 11. Woolery and Megan Grant are first and second among Pac-12 freshmen in slugging percentage with .680 and .675 marks, respectively.
ย
Grab Some Pine
UCLA's pitching staff is dominating the conference once again. The Bruins' hurlers rank first in the conference in the following categories: strikeouts (322), shutouts (17), opposing batting average (.187) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.82). UCLA ranks second behind Stanford in earned run average at 1.59.
ย
UCLA has led the Pac-12 in ERA and wins in each of the last four seasons. In 2022, the Bruins' pitching staff led the Pac-12 in nearly every statistical category: ERA (1.72), strikeouts (486), wins (51), opposing batting average (.180) and saves (12).
ย
Enter Sandwoman
Faraimo has been utilized in a reliever role frequently this season. Nine of her 22 winning decisions have come in relief. Faraimo has thrown two no-hitters this season, improving her career total to seven solo no-hitters. Most recently, Faraimo no-hit No. 3 Florida on Feb. 23, marking the first time a Bruin pitcher no-hit a top-3 opponent since March 28, 2003, when Keira Goerl kept No. 2 Stanford out of the hit column. It was Faraimo's first no-no against a ranked opponent.
ย
Just Get on the Board
UCLA is 23-0 when scoring in the first inning and is 33-0 when it scores first in games this season.
ย
Where the Bruins Stack Up Nationally (entering week 11)
โ€ข In the circle, Megan Faraimo ranks first in the nation in wins (22) and 11th in strikeouts (180)
โ€ข Megan Grant ranks second among all freshmen in the NCAA with 47 runs batted in.
โ€ข Jordan Woolery is right behind Grant, ranking third all freshmen in the NCAA with 41 RBI.
โ€ข Maya Brady is fourth with 114 total bases and is ninth with an .912 slugging percentage.
ย
Climbing UCLA's All-Time Rankings
โ€ข Kelli Godin ranks third on UCLA's all-time stolen bases list with 66 on 75 attempts. She passed Allexis Bennett (2013-16) who had 61 stolen bases. Godin needs seven more to tie her former teammate Briana Perez for second on the list (73).
โ€ข Megan Faraimo's three wins versus Arizona pushed her past her pitching coach Lisa Fernandez on UCLA's all-time wins list into seventh place with 94. Faraimo passed Ally Carda (2012-15) and former teammate Rachel Garcia (2017-21) on the Bruins' career strikeouts list earlier this season. Faraimo has now struck out 948 batters and is four shy of tying Debbie Doom (1982-85) for third all-time with 952.
โ€ข Aaliyah Jordan's ranks fifth on UCLA's career RBI list with 206. Jordan is also four doubles shy of tying GiOnna DiSalvatore's (2008-11) all-time record of 65.
