Breaking out the Brooms
UCLA swept then-No. 6 Stanford at Easton Stadium last weekend to grab hold of top spot in the Pac-12 standings. The Bruins owns a 1.5-game lead on Utah entering week five of the conference schedule.
Game 1 (W, 4-0): Faraimo struck out a season-high 15 batters to lead UCLA to a game-one shutout victory over the Cardinal. The offensive charge was led by junior outfielder Lauryn Carter who went 2-for-2 and scored UCLA's go-ahead run in the third inning. Carter added two huge insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when she recorded the Bruins' third two-out base hit of the inning with a bloop single down the right field line to score a pair.
Game 2 (W, 2-1): Aaliyah Jordan's go-ahead, two-run home run in the second inning lifted UCLA to a win in game two. It was Jordan's first homer of the year and first time leaving the yard since her final game of the 2022 season on Feb. 19.
Game 3 (W, 3-0): Megan Grant's leadoff home run set the tone for the Bruins in game three. Grant's towering shot over the right field fence in the first inning off the second pitch of the game was her seventh longball of the season. She later led off the bottom of the third with a triple and came around to score on a Jordan Woolery single to left field.
Back-to-Back-to-Back Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week
For the third week in a row and the fourth time this season, redshirt senior Megan Faraimo has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week. This marks the ninth time in her career she has received the award, ranking fourth all-time among UCLA hurlers. Faraimo also received the award on Feb. 14, March 20 and March 27 this season.
Faraimo's four weekly awards this season are tied for second most in UCLA history. The last Bruin to achieve the feat was Rachel Garcia in the 2019 and 2018 seasons. Only Keira Goerl has won more with six honors in 2002.
The Oceanside, Calif. native pitched 10.2 innings of shutout ball and earned UCLA's first two wins of the series against the Cardinal. Faraimo was masterful in game one, striking out 15 in her sixth complete-game shutout of the season and her second versus a top-10 opponent. It was the 35th double-digit strikeout performance of her career.
In game two, Faraimo turned out 3.2 innings of scoreless relief and retired the last seven batters she faced to finish off the Bruins' 2-1 victory. Faraimo stretches her conference lead in wins to 17 and strikeouts to 153.
UCLA has received the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week award for the fourth straight week. Brooke Yanez won the award on March 13 before Faraimo's triad of accomplishments.
Aaliyah Jordan Makes Her Return Home; Claims Pac-12 Player of the Week
Redshirt senior utility Aaliyah Jordan was named Pac-12 Player of the Week following a triumphant return home that included a team-leading .571 batting average, two home runs, 1.429 slugging percentage, 10 total bases and three RBI.
In game two, Jordan drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with her first homer of the year to lift UCLA past Stanford, 2-1. In the series finale, Jordan added an insurance run with her second longball in as many days in the sixth inning. Both of Jordan's home runs were to the opposite field.
This marks Jordan's second Pac-12 Player of the Week award of her career and the first since her freshman 2018 season.
Approaching 1,000
Megan Faraimo is 79 strikeouts away from becoming just the third player in UCLA history to record 1,000 strikeouts in a career. In the 1,000 K club are Anjelica Selden (1,441 SO; 2005-08) and Keira Goerl (1,095 SO; 2001-04).
200 Career RBI
With her two-run homer in game two against Stanford last Saturday, Aaliyah Jordan became the sixth player in UCLA history to record 200 runs batted in for a career. Jordan, who has 201 career RBI, trails Julie Marshall (1996-97; 1999-00) for fifth all-time on the list.
The Queen is Back
Aaliyah Jordan has not skipped a beat since making her return to the lineup after a year-long recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The Chula Vista, Calif. native leads the Bruins with a .500 average (7-for-14), two home runs and 13 runs batted since her comeback that occurred in game one of the Oregon series.
Jordan is a two-time NFCA First Team All-American, three-time All-Pac-12 First Team selection and is one of four remaining members from UCLA's 2019 NCAA Championship squad.
Brady: Player of the Year Candidate
Maya Brady paces UCLA in batting average (.435), home runs (11), runs batted in (38) and total bases (93).
The Thousand Oaks product is in the mix for the Pac-12 Triple Crown, ranking third in average and second in both homers and RBI. There have been only three triple crown winners in conference history: Baylee Klingler (Washington - 2022), Jenny Dalton (Arizona - 1995) and Stacey Nuveman (UCLA - 1999).
Brady has three multi-homer games so far this season (San Diego - Feb. 12; Fresno State - March 3; Washington - March 19), stretching her career total to five. She joins a pantheon of Bruin sluggers, becoming just the seventh player in program history to record at least five multi-homer games in their career.
Back to Her Roots
Maya Brady has undertaken a new position this season as the Bruins' everyday shortstop following a left shoulder injury sustained by utility Seneca Curo. Brady grew up playing the position with her travel ball team OC Batbusters Stith.
Brady Shatters 24-Year-Old Record
Maya Brady broke a 24-year-old record during UCLA's Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. Brady recorded 11 consecutive base hits across four games, breaking the mark of 10 consecutive hits formerly held by UCLA legends Lisa Fernandez (March 1993) and Stacey Nuveman (Feb. 1999). In total, Brady opened the first week of 2023 going 13-for-16 with 13 RBI and four home runs to earn her NFCA Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career.
It Must Be in the Genes
Six of Maya Brady's 11 home runs this year have driven in the go-ahead run(s) in a ballgame. Most recently, Brady launched a go-ahead, two-run shot in the seventh inning of game three at Oregon on March 26 to lead UCLA to victory. And the series prior to that, each of Brady's two home runs in game three versus then-No. 10 Washington on March 19 gave UCLA the lead. She led off the game with a homer, and in the third, homered once more to give the Bruins the lead for the remainder of the contest.
Chef Megan Cookin'
Megan Grant ranks second nationally amongst freshmen with 37 runs batted in this season. The 37 RBI also rank third in the conference. The prized 2022 recruit has hit third our fourth in the UCLA batting lineup in 33 of 37 games this season.
J Woo There It Is
Jordan Woolery, the second of UCLA's freshman slugging tandem, leads all freshmen in the Pac-12 with a .607 slugging percentage. The Bruins' everyday first baseman is tied for first in the conference in doubles after picking up her 11th of the year at UC San Diego on Tuesday.
Grab Some Pine
UCLA's pitching staff ranks eighth in the country and first in the Pac-12 with 275 strikeouts this season. Bruins' ace Megan Faraimo, who led the conference in strikeouts a year ago with 292, has sent down a Pac-12-best 153 batters down on strikes this season.
Lauryn Provides Spark at Bottom of Lineup
Junior Lauryn Carter has been swinging a hot stick as of late with seven RBI over her last six games. In Pac-12 play, Carter has had two huge base hits: a grand slam to take the lead in game two against Oregon on March 25 and a two-RBI single in the sixth inning in game one of a 4-0 victory against No. 6 Stanford on March 31.
Enter Sandwoman
Faraimo has been utilized in a reliever role frequently this season. Eight of her 17 winning decisions have come in relief. Faraimo has thrown two no-hitters this season, improving her career total to seven solo no-hitters. Most recently, Faraimo no-hit No. 3 Florida on Feb. 23, marking the first time a Bruin pitcher no-hit a top-3 opponent since March 28, 2003, when Keira Goerl kept No. 2 Stanford out of the hit column. It was Faraimo's first no-no against a ranked opponent.
Pola Setting the Table
Sophomore Savannah Pola has hit leadoff in all but five of UCLA's 37 games this season. When batting leadoff to begin any inning, Pola has reached base in 23 of 50 opportunities (.460 percentage).
