Woolery’s Two Homers Power Bruins to 6-2 Win Over Oregon State
April 06, 2023 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – Jordan Woolery cleared the Easton Stadium left field scoreboard twice with two monster home runs to lead the No. 3 UCLA softball team to a 6-2 victory over Oregon State on Thursday night.
Woolery, who notched the first multi-homer game of her career, set a new career high with five runs batted in.
The Bruins (34-4, 10-3) totaled 10 hits and six walks off Oregon State (11-21-1, 2-10-1) pitcher Tarni Stepto. Savannah Pola went 3-for-3 and knocked in a run with a single to right field in the third inning. In the circle, Megan Faraimo turned in 6.1 innings of shutout ball with 10 strikeouts to earn her Pac-12-leading 18th win of the season. It was the 36th double-digit strikeout performance of Faraimo's career.
Faraimo did not allow a single baserunner to reach scoring position in her outing. She retired the side four times in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings.
With two outs in the third inning, Woolery struck for her first home run off the first pitch of the at-bat. Her blast scored Maya Brady who singled earlier on in the inning. Brady went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and scored twice on each of Woolery's blasts.
Woolery made her next trip to the plate the following inning, this time with two runners on base. The freshman was jammed on an inside 0-2 pitch but turned her hands around fast enough to send the ball into the left field trees once again. The Walnut Creek, Calif. native leads all freshmen in the Pac-12 with a .664 slugging percentage and is now second on the team with a .373 batting average.
Grant and Woolery rank second and third among freshmen nationally in runs batted in with 37 and 36, respectively.
Freshman Taylor Tinsley entered in relief in the sixth inning but was pulled after allowing a two-run homer to Beaver first baseman Frankie Hammoude.
Also recording base hits for the Bruins were Megan Grant, Sharlize Palacios and Anna Vines.
UCLA and Oregon State square off in game two tomorrow night at 6 p.m. (PT) at Easton Stadium. The contest will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Tracy Warren on the call.
