No. 3 Bruins Best Beavers, 11-0, in Hit Parade
April 07, 2023 | Softball
LOS ANGELES โ Megan Grant knocked in five runs in a 2-for-2 effort to help the No. 3 UCLA softball team to a 11-0 mercy-rule shutout against Oregon State at Easton Stadium on Friday evening.
ย
Eight of the Bruins' (35-4, 11-3) starting nine recorded at least one hit for a grand total of 13, including four for extra bases. With UCLA's 12th mercy-rule win of the season, it has now taken each of its five Pac-12 series this season.
ย
In the circle, Brooke Yanez turned in a one-hit, complete-game shutout with four strikeouts to earn her 11th win of the year. The one base hit the left-hander allowed was to the second batter of the game. Yanez did not let a runner reach scoring position after the first inning.
ย
Sharlize Palacios put the Bruins on the board with a solo homer to left field in the second inning for her seventh of the year. After a pair of singles by Alyssa Garcia and Kennedy Powell, Grant blasted one into the upper canopy of the right field trees with a three-run home run to break the game open.
ย
The San Bruno, Calif. native now leads the team with 42 RBI and ranks second among freshmen nationally in that category.
ย
The Beavers' (11-21-1, 2-11-1) Ellie Garcia allowed 10 earned runs in her loss.
ย
UCLA added six more runs on six hits in the third inning. A double by Aaliyah Jordan put two in scoring position for sophomore Savannah Pola who cashed in with a two-RBI single to center. With her two hits tonight, Pola is 5-for-6 with two RBI so far this series.
ย
The Bruins' No. 7, 8 and 9 hitters โ Garcia, Powell and Janelle Meoño โ all went first-pitch swinging and recorded three consecutive base hits on three straight pitches. Meoño's single that bounced on the third-base chalk line scored Garcia to stretch UCLA's lead to 8-0.
ย
Grant stepped to the plate next, and on an 0-1 pitch, knocked in another pair.
ย
Rachel Cid continued the hit parade into the fourth inning with a double, advancing pinch runner Lauren Hatch to third base. Freshman Ramsey Suarez plated the Bruins' 11th and final run of the night on a sacrifice fly to center field.
ย
UCLA looks to sweep its second consecutive Pac-12 series tomorrow when it takes on Oregon State at 1 p.m. (PT) at Easton Stadium. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Tracy Warren on the call.
