Cheng, Hallaselkä Set For Key Summers on the International Circuit

June 14, 2023 | Swimming & Diving

A pivotal summer is about to get underway for a pair of UCLA divers, as freshman Eden Cheng (Great Britain) and incoming freshman Lauren Hallaselkä (Finland) are both slated to represent their home countries in major senior national competitions in the coming weeks.

Cheng, who earned Pac-12 Freshman Diver of the Year honors this spring after a standout debut campaign in Westwood, will compete for Great Britain at the 2023 European Games.

Meanwhile, Hallaselkä will suit up for Finland at both the European Games and the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

The meets are of utmost importance to both countries, as the first quota spots for the 2024 Olympics Games in Paris are up for grabs.

Cheng was one of just 14 athletes selected to Great Britain's roster for the European Games. She will compete in the women's 10-meter diving event, scheduled for Jun. 23 (prelims and finals) in Rzeszow, Poland.

The London native earned on a spot on the national squad after placing third in platform at the 2023 British Diving Championships in late May.

Hallaselkä is set to compete in both springboard events at both meets. In Poland, she'll tackle 3-meter on Jun. 25 followed by 1-meter on Jun. 28. Then in Japan, she'll vie in 1M (prelims on Jul. 13, finals on Jul. 14) followed by 3M (prelims on Jul. 19, finals on Jul. 21).
