UCLA Squashes Indiana Comeback, Wins 3-1

September 01, 2023 | Women's Volleyball

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The UCLA women's volleyball team recorded 17 kills in the fourth set along the way to a 3-1 victory over Indiana at The Walter Pyramid in the Long Beach State Tournament Friday night.

Set scores were 18-25, 25-14, 25-21 and 27-25.

The Hoosiers (3-2) had set point on the line in the fourth, 24-23, when middle blocker Desiree Becker quickly sided out with a monster kill on an assist from freshman setter Ashley Mullen. Seconds later, Cheridyn Leverette aced Indiana to put match point at the service line for the Bruins (3-1).

UCLA went on to win the set and match in extra points, 27-25, on a long rally that featured a pancake dig from libero Peyton Dueck and kill by Carly Hendrickson.

Middle blocker Anna Dodson scored a match-high 17.0 points coming off 12 kills (.450 hitting percentage) and five blocks. Iman Ndiaye joined Dodson added 12 kills (.320%). In the back row, Dueck and defensive specialist Kat Lutz snuffed out 15 and 11 digs, respectively. Mullen totaled 41 assists on the night.

Hendrickson tallied the first kill of her collegiate career in first set.

The Bruins swatted seven of their 10 blocks in set two to command themselves to a dominant 25-14 victory. Indiana hit a -.125 percentage in the frame with 11 attack errors. Leading UCLA at the net was Becker who tallied three consecutive block assists and a kill to push the Bruins out to an 8-4 lead. Dodson was responsible for two blocks on UCLA's 23rd and 25th points. In total, six Bruins got in the block column in the second set.

Leverette's solid start to the season continued in set three, picking up six of her nine kills in that frame. The Hampton, Ga. native's most impressive swings came on back-to-back points to even the set, 12-12. Three straight kills – two by Ndiaye and one by Leverette – put the set away, 25-21.

Hendrickson's career night carried on into the fourth. The Mt. Notre Dame High School product returned a massive solo block on Indiana outside hitter Kaley Rammelsberg to give UCLA a small 9-6 buffer.

Dodson's biggest swing of the evening was on a slide that she deposited cross-court to tie up set four, 22-22.

UCLA closes the weekend versus Long Beach State at The Walter Pyramid tomorrow night at 7 p.m. (PT). The match is available for streaming on ESPN+.
