UCLA Downs No. 23 Hawai’i for Outrigger Volleyball Challenge Title

September 11, 2023 | Women's Volleyball

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Grayce Olson led the UCLA women's volleyball team with 16 kills in its ranked, 3-1 victory over No. 23 Hawai'i in the Stan Sheriff Center Sunday night.

Set scores were 23-25, 25-15, 25-23 and 25-22.

With the win, the Bruins (7-1) were crowned Outrigger Volleyball Challenge champions for the second year in a row. Tonight also marked Alfee Reft's first victory over a ranked opponent as a head coach.

Iman Ndiaye, who was named tournament MVP, reached double-digit kills for the third time this week with 13 kills, five digs and two service aces against the Rainbow Wahine (5-3). Olson hit an efficient .364 and tallied three block assists en route to earning all-tournament team honors. Cheridyn Leverette was also selected to the all-tournament team. She posted a team-high 18.0 points, 13 kills, three blocks, three service aces and eight digs versus Hawai'i.

Libero Peyton Dueck led UCLA with 16 digs. Audrey Pak and Ashley Mullen rotated at the setter position, recorded 25 and 20 assists, respectively.

The Bruins found themselves in a 7-2 hole early in set one. A solo block and block assist by Pak inched the Bruins closer to 15-11. Defensive specialist Kat Lutz led a 4-0 run from the service line, tying up the set on a tip kill from Leverette at 18-18. The two squads traded points until the 21-21 mark when Hawai'i pulled away.

Pak provided a defensive spark at the beginning of set two with another solo block and block assist to push UCLA out to a 4-1 lead, forcing an early Hawai'i timeout. Pak bested her career high in blocks set earlier this season with five tonight (two solo, three assisted).

Leverette strung together kills on three consecutive plays to give the Bruins a 7-1 advantage. Later in the second, Becker floated in the air and finessed a tip kill that landed between four Rainbow Wahine to make it a 17-12 UCLA lead. Leverette made the lead insurmountable at 20-13 with an ace and a serve on the next play which resulted in a Hawai'i attacking error. Olson notched two kills down the stretch in set two to put it away, 25-15.

Olson led the Bruins with six more kills at a .417 rate in set three. She also went to work defensively with two block assists for UCLA's 17th and 18th points of the set. The Rainbow Wahine would claw back from what was once a five-point deficit to tie it up, 22-all. Olson delivered a perfect pass on a Hawai'i serve and connected with Mullen for a kill to reclaim the lead for good the next play.

Hawai'i, behind its crowd of 6,971 fans, owned a 17-14 lead in set four and was fighting to force a fifth. Hometown kid and Aiea, Hawaii native Mokihana stepped to the service line for the Bruins after a sideout and dealt an ace. A solo block by Leverette knotted the set, 18-all. Olson picked up a block assists and two more kills for three UCLA's final five points to close out the victory.
