Bruins Fight, But Lose in Five at Oklahoma
September 15, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
NORMAN, Okla. – Iman Ndiaye registered a team-high 13 kills in the UCLA women's volleyball team's five-set loss to Oklahoma at McCasland Field House Friday night.
Set scores were 22-25, 21-25, 25-15, 26-24 and 7-15.
The Bruins' (7-2) reverse sweep bid came up just short despite an epic fourth-set comeback. UCLA trailed 23-19 in set four with the Sooners (6-2) two points away from match point.
Outside hitter Grayce Olson stepped to the service line after a kill by Ndiaye and an Oklahoma attacking error at 23-21. She dealt an ace that was redacted after officials ruled a camera operator obstructed the play. Olson exhibited some mental toughness serving up two more aces to even the set 23-all. Carly Hendrickson tallied her team-leading fifth kill of the set on a long rally to put set point at the line for the Bruins who forced a fifth following an errant Sooner attack.
Oklahoma jumped out to an 8-3 lead in set five that UCLA was unable to recover from, snapping a seven-match winning streak. Three separate Sooners recorded double-digit kills, led by Taylor Preston with 16.
Olson and middle blocker Anna Dodson each reached double-digit kills with 12 apiece. Desiree Becker added six at a .455 clip in addition to four block assists.
After dropping the opening set, the Bruins looked poised to even the match with an 18-11 lead in set two. However, Oklahoma scored 14 of the final 17 points in the set thanks to three separate runs of 4+ points.
UCLA's best performance came in set three, hitting for 15 kills at a .407 rate. Becker was a perfect 5-for-5 on kill attempts while Dodson collected four more kills on an errorless five swings.
The Bruins look to even the two-match series with the Sooners tomorrow at the McCasland Field House at 12 p.m. (PT) on ESPN+. Chad McKee (play by play) and Kelly Files (analyst) will be on the call.
