UCLA Drops Five-Set Thriller to USC

LOS ANGELES โ Iman Ndiaye scored a team-high 18.0 points off 16 kills and four blocks in the UCLA women's volleyball team's five-set loss to USC at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Wednesday night.

Set scores were 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-17.

Ndiaye also recorded the second double-double of her career with 12 digs, both performances coming in back-to-back matches. Middle blocker Desiree Becker added an errorless 12 kills at a .667 hitting percentage to go along with seven blocks.

The Bruins (8-3, 0-1 Pac-12) and Trojans (7-4, 1-0 Pac-12) traded points in a thrilling fifth set. USC had the first of three match points at the line at 14-13 when Becker shut down an attack by London Wijay with her seventh block of the night. Cheridyn Leverette tooled the USC block on the next play to turn the tables and put match point at the line for the Bruins.

The Trojans' star pin hitter Skylar Fields put up kills on the next two plays and a USC block won the first of the two-match series.

In set one, USC tied up what was once a 17-11 UCLA lead at 23-23. Anna Dodson delivered an emphatic block on a swing by Fields that returned just past the 10-foot line to give the Bruins the momentum. A kill by Carly Hendrickson put the opening stanza away.

Dodson finished the match with nine kills and seven blocks.

After limiting USC to sub-.100 in set one, the Trojans hit an errorless 14 kills for a .412 hitting percentage in set two.

Leverette checked into set three for the first time in the match and delivered two kills on her first two swings to give UCLA a 17-15 lead. USC went on a 4-0 run to bring the set within one, 24-23, but a service error handed the Bruins set point to take a 2-1 lead.
