Bruins Win Shootout in Seattle, 3-2

September 28, 2023 | Women's Soccer

Seattle, Wash. โ€“ No. 5 UCLA defeated Washington, 3-2, in a game that had just one goal scored in the run of play and the final three goals scored via penalty kick. The Bruins held a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes, but the Huskies tied it up on a pair of penalty kicks. UCLA scored the game-winner in the 60th minute on a penalty kick of its own.
ย
UCLA (8-1, 2-0 in the Pac-12) gained the early 1-0 advantage after a free kick was earned by Ally Cook just outside the box in the seventh minute. Sunshine Fontes took the free kick and slammed it into the top left for her fifth goal of the year.
ย
The Bruins went up 2-0 in the 15th minute on a picture-perfect team goal that went end-to-end on six quick passes from Lilly Reale, Jayden Perry, Fontes, Ally Lemos, Emma Egizii and Reilyn Turner. Cook finished it, taking Turner's cross in front of the goal and sending it past Washington goalkeeper Olivia Juarez. Cook's goal was her team-leading sixth of the season. The Huskies (5-3-2, 0-2-0) trimmed UCLA's lead in half in the 39th minute when Ioanna Papatheodorou converted a penalty kick after the Bruins were called for a foul in the box. Papatheodorou connected on a second penalty kick to tie the game in the 56th minute after another UCLA foul in the box.
ย
Just three and a half minutes after the Huskies evened the score, UCLA earned a penalty kick of its own, also from a foul in the box. Perry hit her shot beyond the reach of Juarez, scoring her second goal of the season.
ย
The Huskies still had a chance to tie in the 79th minute when they earned a free kick about six feet outside the box, but the kick was sent high. Washington was fouled about six feet outside the box in the 79th minute and had a chance to tie on the free kick but missed wide.
ย
Seattle native Neeku Purcell earned the win in goal for the Bruins, allowing only the two penalty kicks. She had three saves on eight Husky shots. Suarez had one save for Washington on 11 UCLA shots.
ย
UCLA will next play at Washington State on Sunday, Oct. 1. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks at Noon.
