BRUINS CLOSE ROAD TRIP IN PULLMAN SUNDAY ย
No. 5 UCLA (8-1, 2-0 in the Pac-12) will finish up its road trip on Sunday, Oct. 1 at No. 23 Washington State (7-2, 0-1). The game will take place at Lower Soccer Field at 12pm and will be televised live on Pac-12 Network. ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย

UCLA WINS SHOOTOUT IN SEATTLE ย ย
No. 5 UCLA defeated Washington, 3-2, in a game that had just one goal scored in the run of play and the final three goals scored via penalty kick. The Bruins held a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes thanks to goals by Sunshine Fontes and Ally Cook, but the Huskies tied it up on a pair of penalty kicks by Ioanna Papatheodorou. UCLA scored the game-winner in the 60th minute on a penalty kick of its own, taken by Jayden Perry after Fontes was fouled in the box.

ALLY IS COOKIN'ย
Forward Ally Cook moved into the team lead in scoring with another goal in the Bruins' 3-2 win at Washington. Cook, who has scored three goals in her last two games, has six goals overall to rank third in the Pac-12. She also ranks fourth in the conference in points scored with 13. The Coto de Caza, Calif. native has totaled 11 goals as a Bruin since transferring from the University of Oregon in 2022. She scored 17 goals as a Duck, and her total of 28 career goals ranks second on the Bruin team behind only Reilyn Turner's 33 career goals. Cook was selected to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week after her week one performance and earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and College Soccer News Team of the Week honors after week two. ย  ย  ย ย

TIP YOUR HAT TO FONTES ย ย
After recording her second hat trick in as many seasons in the Long Beach State win on Sept. 7, graduate midfielder Sunshine Fontes was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and the UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by Ready. Fontes moved up to No. 3 on UCLA's all-time list for career hat tricks, tied with teammate Reilyn Turner, Danesha Adams (2004-07) and Sarah-Gayle Swanson (2000-03). Fontes' first hat trick came on Aug. 25, 2022 vs. CSUN. She ranks second on the team in scoring this season with five goals and 11 points. Fontes now has 21 career goals. ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย

TURNING OVER THE RECORD BOOKSย
With her goal at CSUN on Sept. 10, Reilyn Turner moved into sole possession of seventh place on UCLA's career goals list with 34. She needs just one more goal to move into a tie for fifth place with Sarah-Gayle Swanson (2000-03) and Staci Duncan (1998-2001). Turner also ranks in UCLA's Top 10 for career game-winning goals with 13 (tied for ninth) and career hat tricks with two (tied for third). This season, she leads the team in assists with four, just one behind the Pac-12 assists leader, and has secured a fourth consecutive double-digit point total with 10 points (3g, 4a). ย ย

COOK, MCMAHON EARN SECOND PAC-12 OFFENSIVE HONORS ย ย
Bruins Ally Cook and Quincy McMahon were selected this week's Pac-12 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Cook had a two-goal performance in the Bruins' 3-1 win at Colorado, moving into the team lead in scoring with five goals and 11 points. She ranks fourth in the Pac-12 in those categories and is second in the conference with two game-winning goals. Cook has totaled 27 career goals - 17 at Oregon from 2019-21 and 10 at UCLA from 2022-23. McMahon assisted on Cook's game-winner in the first half and helped lead a Bruin defensive effort that limited Colorado to just five shots and three shots on goal. Cook's Offensive Player of the Week award was her second this season. McMahon won Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second week in a row and for the third time in her career.

OPPONENTS WITH LITTLE SHOT ย ย
UCLA has held opponents to five shots or less in seven of the team's nine games and has held all but one team to single-digit shot totals. The Bruins' lockdown defense, which has a team goals against average of 0.78 and five shutouts, includes goalkeeper Neeku Purcell, center backs Lilly Reale and Jayden Perry and outside backs Quincy McMahon and Ayo Oke. ย  ย

IN THE RANKINGS
UCLA remained at No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches poll for the third-straight week. The Bruins are No. 4 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll for the second week in a row. ย  ย

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
Washington State enters Sunday's game with a 7-3 overall and 0-2 conference record. The Cougars led USC 1-0 at halftime of its Thursday game but saw the Trojans score two in the second half to take the victory. Margie Detrizio, who scored Washington State's lone goal against USC, leads the team in scoring with 11 points and goals scored with four. Goalkeeper Nadia Cooper, the 2021 Pac-12 Freshman and Goalkeeper of the Year, holds a 1.11 goals against average with two shutouts. ย

THE SERIES WITH WASHINGTON STATE
UCLA is 20-5-5 all-time against Washington State and is unbeaten in the last four contests, going 3-0-1 during that time. Last year's matchup resulted in a 1-0 UCLA home victory on a Lilly Reale 62nd minute goal. Washington State won two straight against the Bruins in 2018 and 2017. UCLA is seeking its first win in Pullman since 2014. ย ย

BRUINS TO WATCH
A total of four Bruins have been tabbed for the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Watch Lists - defender Lilly Reale, midfielders Sunshine Fontes and Ally Lemos, and forward Reilyn Turner. All four earned All-Pacific Region and All-Pac-12 honors a year ago. Reale was a second-team All-American and the winner of the Honda Sport Award. The Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and the College Cup's Most Outstanding Defensive Player led the UCLA defense to a 0.55 goals against average, UCLA lowest in eight years, and to a Pac-12-best 14 shutouts. Fontes led UCLA in scoring a year ago with 11 goals and 30 points. She also ranked second on the team in assists with eight, one behind Pac-12 leader Lemos, who was selected to the Top Drawer Soccer Freshman Best XI first team. Lemos, the only field player on the Bruins to start in all 25 games in 2022, was an all-tournament selection at the College Cup. Turner, the College Cup's Most Outstanding Offensive Player, tied for the team lead in goals scored with 11 last year and has posted 10 or more goals every season. She led the NCAA in 2022 with seven game-winning goals and ranks No. 9 all-time at UCLA with 13 career game-winners. ย  ย  ย ย

FOR LOVE OF COUNTRY
