Quick Hits
UCLA hosted CSUN on Monday in the team's regular season home opener, settling for a 1-1 tie. Both squads scored in the final 10 minutes of the contest, as Jack Sarkos opened the scoring in the 84th before CSUN answered with a succesful PK conversion in the 88th. Sarkos's goal came off a long ball from Pablo Greenlee, who split two Matador backs to set up Sarkos at the back post with an uncontested header, going back across to the opposite post to beat the CSUN keeper. UCLA had the three best chances of the opening 80 minutes, having a PK go off the woodwork in the 20th followed by strong shots from Tucker Lepley in the 34th and Sarkos in the 58th. UCLA out-shot CSUN 18-8 for the game.
Last Time Out Against Rutgers
Then-senior midfielder Rliey Ferch found the back of the net in the 25th minute, and that tally held up as the game-winner as UCLA downed Rutgers, 1-0, on Oct. 29 of last season in Piscataway, N.J. The goal came off a corner kick, with Ferch receiving a direct pass above the box before taking a touch and drilling a shot in the top-right corner. UCLA was out-shot 16-5 for the contest but largely kept away from conceding dangerous opportunities (besidse an 86th minute PK that was stopped).
Bruins Against the Big Ten
UCLA has accrued a 28-19-4 record all-time against active Big Ten men's soccer progams, including strong marks against Rutgers (7-1-1) and Penn State (5-0-0). The Bruins have faced off, at some point in program history, against all but two of the currently-sponsored Big Ten men's soccer progams (Michigan, Michigan State).
2022 In Review
UCLA appeared in two major national polls this week, receiving votes in both the United Soccer Coaches and College Soccer News polls. In addition, the Bruins were ranked eighth in the United Soccer Coaches Far West Region poll. UCLA was ranked as high as No. 27 (CSN) in national preseason polls, and was the team with the most votes outside the top-25 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll.
Bruins in the TDS Top-100 Rankings
UCLA had three players named to TopDrawerSoccer's rankings of the top-100 players to watch in the country: Tommy Silva (No. 6), Ryan Becher (41), and Tucker Lepley (54). Silva was the highest-ranked back in the country. The Bruins' three cited players are second-most in the Pac-12 and tied for fourth-most nationally (trailing Washington, Akron, Kentucky).
