UCLA Bench, Dueck Lead Comeback Victory Over Pepperdine

HONOLULU, Hawaii โ The UCLA women's volleyball team used a 10-0 run in the fourth set to spur a five-set, comeback victory over Pepperdine in the Outrigger Volleyball Challenge at the Stan Sheriff Center Thursday night.

Set scores were 25-20, 21-25, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-10.

The Bruins (5-1) had their backs against the wall after dropping sets two and three. Leading the charge in the fourth set was setter Audrey Pak who entered as a serving substitution. The Moraga, Calif. native, who set career highs in assists and aces in week one earlier this season, went on a 9-0 run from the service line with an ace to push UCLA to a 12-4 lead over the Waves (1-5).

During that stretch, Iman Ndiaye, Anna Dodson and Grayce Olson all recorded kills and the Bruins tallied two blocks. UCLA limited Pepperdine to a .000 hitting percentage in the set with nine attack errors.

Ndiaye led UCLA with a match-high 18 kills at a .390 hitting percentage. With her 20.0 points tonight, including one ace and two block assists, Ndiaye has now recorded four of the five highest single-match point totals of her career in the first six matches of her senior season. It was her third 20-point performance.

Libero Peyton Dueck achieved the first double-double of her career with a UCLA career-high 22 digs and career high 12 assists. It was the first double-double of the season by a Bruin. Dueck put on a show with two amazing bump set assists. The Aptos High School product ran past the service line with her back facing the net in the third and fourth sets to connect for two kills with Olson.

For the third match in a row, Desiree Becker recorded seven-plus kills with a .429 hitting percentage or better. Leverette added 17 kills (.295), including a team-high five in the fifth set to put the match away.

Pak's impressive night continued into the fifth set, assisting on five kills and recording a kill herself. Also making noise off the bench was opposite hitter Kate Lane who saved her first two kills of the match for the Bruins' seventh and eighth points of the fifth set. Lane also tallied two block assists in the fourth and fifth frames. UCLA dominated the final set, accounting for kills on 11 of its 15 points (.435 hitting percentage) and siding out on 72 percent of Pepperdine's serve attempts.

UCLA's major blemish in the first three sets was its 14 service errors. ย

Dodson, who totaled 10 kills tonight, seized the first lead of the night with three consecutive kills in set one to put UCLA up 15-14. The Bruins put an emphatic end to the set with a monster roof by Becker and Olson.
