UCLA Concludes Indoor Season Opener in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. โ The UCLA track and field team wrapped up its first competition of the indoor season on Saturday at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. The Bruins had podium finishes in the men's pole vault, men's shot put, and in women's pole vault, which included an event victory.

UCLA also had several top-five finishes in the meet.

TRACK EVENT RESULTS
Junior Sonia Virk (56.91) won Section Two of the women's unseeded 400m race, finishing eighth overall on the day.

In the men's 200m dash, junior Elijah Major ran a 21.51 to win Section Four and a top-10 finish. Sophomore John Robinson IV secured eighth place in the field with a 21.22.

UCLA had three top-10 finishes in the 60m race. Aly Conyers (7.58) and Kaylen Fletcher (7.59) finished second and third, respectively, in Heat Two of the event. Conyers finished seventh overall and Fletcher finished eighth. Another appearance by John Robinson IV also saw him finishing eighth (6.88) on the men's side.

Conyers also ran a 37.73 in the women's 300m race, placing fourth among collegiate athletes and earning a fifth-place finish overall. Fletcher would also return and win her section with a 38.27, placing her eighth in the field. Trailing three University of Texas Longhorns was freshman Gabriel Clement II, who finished fourth (33.67) in his collegiate debut in the men's 300m.

FIELD EVENT RESULTS
UCLA saw strong performances in the men's and women's pole vault competitions on Saturday. On the women's side, seniors Ka'Leila Abrille and Katerina Adamiec had podium finishes. Both competing in Flight 2, Abrille finished first in the flight with a clearance of 4.12m (13-06.25) and Adamiec had a clearance of 3.97m (13-00.25) to finish third. The success in this flight led to an event victory for Abrille and a third-place finish for Adamiec. Also soaring high was sophomore Hunter O'Brien, whose clearance of 5.24m (17-02.25) took home second place in the men's competition.

Junior Amber Jackson leapedย 1.67m (5-05.75) to finish tied for seventh in the women's high jump. Clearingย 1.96m (6-05.00), sophomore Leon Gillis notched sixth place in the men's event.

In the women's triple jump, graduate student Asha Fletcher finished seventh.

Graduate student Natalie Ramirez placed seventh in the women's shot put with a 15.62m (51-03.00) throw, setting a new personal best. A third-place podium finish was secured by senior Aidan Elbettar, throwing 17.15m (56-03.75).

UCLA track and field will split squads next weekend from Jan. 26-27 for two meets. A number of Bruins will return to the Albuquerque Convention Center to take part in the New Mexico Open, hosted by the University of New Mexico. UCLA will also head to Seattle, Wash., to compete at the UW Invitational hosted at Dempsey Indoor.
