Bruins Hold Strong Against Beavs, Win 65-54

January 07, 2024 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – No. 2 UCLA Women's Basketball defeated Oregon State 65-54 on Sunday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.

Charisma Osborne led the Bruins (14-0, 3-0 Pac-12) with 15 points, eight rebounds, three steals and invaluable veteran leadership on the defensive end. Sophomores Kiki Rice, Londynn Jones and Lauren Betts all finished in double figures with 13, 12 and 10 points respectively. Eight Bruins contributed to the scoring column in the tightly contested victory.

UCLA got out to a strong start to the contest, paced by three pull-up jumpers from Osborne. Jones got the crowd hyped with two first-quarter threes, but the defenses of both squads tightened up and the game went scoreless for the next four minutes.

The Bruins' sophomore point guard ended the first quarter with a shifty sidestep three to end the scoring drought, giving UCLA a 15-11 lead.

Rice ended the second quarter the same way as the first, scoring a driving layup as the buzzer sounded. In a quarter where the offense struggled, an Osborne-led Bruin defense kept the Beavers in check. UCLA led 31-26 going into the half. Osborne had eight points and Rice added seven of her own in a balanced scoring effort through the first 20 minutes.

Coming out of the break, the Bruins pushed to extend their lead. UCLA went on a 9-0 run to go up 11 on the Beavs. The run was capped off by a sweet pass from Osborne who found a cutting Lina Sontag; the German made no mistake at the basket. The Bruins embraced the physical nature of the contest, with Jones, Rice and Osborne applying fierce on-ball pressure to delay and deter the offensive sets of Oregon State. The Bruins held their lead, heading into the fourth quarter with a 52-40 advantage.

Angela Dugalić, Christeen Iwuala and Sontag impressed defensively, taking turns trying to slow down the talented Raegan Beers of Oregon State. The trio also closed down the driving lanes with their length and footwork. Sontag's and Iwuala's efforts off the bench highlighted the deep roster that Coach Close turns to throughout the game.

The Bruins started the final with four quick points, picking up the momentum and fierce pressure from the third quarter. The Bruins had the Beavers down 16 points before an Oregon State run; the 9-0 scoring shift prompted Coach Close to call a timeout with four minutes on the clock.

UCLA responded with Osborne hitting a much needed three-pointer off a lovely sequence of passes.

The triple by the graduate student extended UCLA's lead to 11 with two minutes left. The Bruins held onto the lead, and the crowd rose to its feet in Pauley Pavilion to deliver a standing ovation for the undefeated squad as the clock expired.

UP NEXT: at USC (Jan. 14)
The Bruins aim to maintain their undefeated conference record against cross-town rival USC on Jan. 14 at the Galen Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT, the rivalry rematch will be broadcast to Pac-12 Los Angeles.
