Boyd, Perez Named UCLA Student-Athletes of the Week

LOS ANGELES – Junior Maggie Boyd and freshman Sally Perez of UCLA Beach Volleyball have been selected the Student-Athletes of the Week for competitions completed between Nov. 12-18.
The Bruins took down the field of 64 to capture the Bruins' first-ever AVCA National Collegiate Beach Pairs Championship on Sunday, Nov. 17. The Bruin pair went 7-0 on the weekend, dropping only one set to secure the crown. They opened with two wins on Friday, winning in straight sets over Costal Carolina and Texas A&M - Corpus Christi to win their pool. The duo was then reseeded at No. 7 in the Champions Bracket and opened play on Saturday, Nov. 16 with a straight-set win over a pair from USC and then posted another straight-set win over a duo from Texas in the second of three matches on Saturday. The third match of the day saw the UCLA duo win a quarterfinal bout against Long Beach State's second-seeded pair of Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah in their only three-setter of the tournament, 21-18, 17-21, 15-12. That set up a semifinal match on Sunday morning where the UCLA tandem took out the 11th-seeded Cal Poly's team in identical set scores of 21-16.
All the Bruins had to do in the title match was take down the 10th-ranked pair in the world, TCU's top-seeded tandem of Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno. The duo from Spain was named the AVCA National Pair of the Year in 2023 (34-1 record) and took off the 2024 collegiate season to train for the Paris Olympic Games, where they finished fifth. The Horned Frogs pair hadn't dropped a set in the tournament and Boyd and Perez used timely blocking and aggressive serving to post a straight-set victory in the finals, 21-16, 21-17.
The duo secures its first-career UCLA student-athletes of the week award.
