Pitching Stars on Day Two at The Mary Nutter

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. โ Freshman Kaitlyn Terry led the No. 19 UCLA softball team to a 10-2 mercy rule victory over Illinois in the Bruins' first game at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday. In game two against Baylor, sophomore Taylor Tinsley allowed zero earned runs and struck out a career-high 11 batters in a 5-3 loss.

Terry entered in relief a third of an inning into the Bruins' (6-5) game against the Fighting Illini (2-6). The left-hander was immediately effective, limiting Illinois to just two runs scored in the inning with a ground out and strikeout upon entering the circle. Terry grew more confident as her outing went on, finishing the game with three strikeouts and just one hit and two walks allowed over 4.2 scoreless innings.

UCLA began chipping away into Illinois' early lead in the third inning. Shortstop Maya Brady tripled and was moved over on a sacrifice fly by Savannah Pola. The Bruins captured the lead in the fourth inning on a three-run homer by Jordan Woolery to center field โ her first of the season.

The Bruins opened the bottom of the fifth with three straight walks, priming themselves for another high-scoring inning. Woolery notched her fourth RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to right field and, in the next at-bat, Thessa Malau'ulu drove in UCLA's sixth run of the day with a double to left center. A single by Janelle Meoño โ her first since the Bruins' season opener โ scored another and brought the mercy rule run up to the plate.

Brady smashed a three-run homer to center field to give the Bruins the 10-2 walk-off victory. This performance comes on the heels of Brady's walk-off single against Nebraska in the bottom of the seventh yesterday.

Just like the night before, UCLA was treated to a pitching duel starring Tinsley and Baylor's RyLee Crandall. Tinsley was masterful working out of several jams early in the game. She found herself with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the third after a batter reached on a dropped third strike and an 11-pitch walk to Baylor's Shaylon Govan. Tinsley struck the next two batters out, injecting fuel into her team heading for the bat racks.

UCLA found the hit it needed in the bottom of the inning with a single by Megan Grant that scored Jadelyn Allchin from second base.

Tinsley gave up two singles with one in the top of the fourth before inducing an easy comebacker groundout and a roller to Brady at shortstop.

Grant continued supplying runs in the bottom of the fifth with a two-RBI double into left field to stretch UCLA's lead to 3-0.

The Bears (7-3) put themselves in scoring position early in the inning again in the seventh with back-to-back singles into left field. After a flyout to center field, Baylor took advantage of two UCLA throwing errors to tie the score, 3-3. A double to down the left field line by Baylor's Emily Hott scored two runs and captured the lead. Aliyah Binford entered in relief and picked up the save.
