No. 10 UCLA Splits on Opening Day
February 09, 2024 | Softball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 10 UCLA softball team defeated Maryland, 6-5, and lost to No. 8 Texas, 3-2, at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on opening day at Easton Stadium on Friday.
ย
The Bruins (1-1) were tasked with mounting an early 4-0 deficit through two innings against the Terrapins (1-1). After clawing to within one run of the lead at 5-4, sophomore catcher Alexis Ramirez delivered the late-game heroics with a game-tying home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the first longball of her career. Ramirez was a total 3-for-5 over UCLA's two games.
ย
Later that inning, an infield single by Jadelyn Allchin and a walk by Janelle Meoño put a runner in scoring position with two outs for redshirt senior Maya Brady. The reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year hit a shot up the middle to single home the go-ahead run.
ย
Taylor Tinsley was called out of the bullpen to close the top of the seventh. After surrendering two singles to start the inning, Tinsley struck out the next three batters she faced to secure the win and her first career save.
ย
Freshman Kaitlyn Terry earned the start against Maryland and allowed four runs in the top of the first before being relieved after 43 pitches. The Bruins began chipping away in the bottom of the second with their first three hits of the season. Janelle Meoño kickstarted the rally with a single down the left field line which moved Ramirez, who walked earlier in the inning, into scoring position. Brady smacked her first hit of the season the next at-bat โ a double off the left-center field wall โ to score Ramirez. Savannah Pola stepped to the plate next and brought home both Meoño and Brady with a single into right field.
ย
A solo homer by Maryland's Michaela Jones the next inning pushed the lead back to two runs at 5-3.
ย
Ramirez notched her first hit of the day on a lead-off single in the fourth inning and was substituted by Lauren Hatch as a pinch runner. Lauren Hatch's heads-up baserunning brought the game back within one run. On a long flyout to left field by Allchin, Hatch tagged up from first base to put herself into scoring position. The Kempner, Texas native swiped third base during Meoño's at-bat and scampered home after the Terrapin catcher's throw sailed into the outfield.
ย
Jada Cecil also made her UCLA debut and pitched the bulk of the workload with 4.2 innings. Cecil struck out three and walked four.
ย
A pitching duel ensued in the night cap between Longhorn (2-0) starting pitcher Teagan Kavan and Tinsley, who was penciled in as the starter following her save against Maryland. Kavan held the Bruins scoreless and allowed just one hit through her first five innings while Tinsley limited the damage to just three runs, giving her offense an opportunity for another comeback.
ย
Texas' first hit of the game was a solo home run by Reese Atwood in the second inning. The Longhorns tacked on another run in the third inning with a sacrifice bunt by Bella Dayton and a throwing error by UCLA third baseman Thessa Malau'ulu. Malau'ulu's throw was wide left of second baseman Seneca Curo who was sprinting over to cover first base.
ย
The Longhorns loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth on a single, fielding error by Tinsley and a walk. Mia Scott plated Texas' final run of the game with an RBI single into right field. Tinsley pitched a complete game and only one of her three runs were earned.
ย
Kavan's command slipped and UCLA's hitters connected in the bottom of the sixth. Following a lead-off, four-pitch walk to Brady, Jordan Woolery hit the Bruins' hardest ball of the game with a single off the right-center field wall to put runners on the corners. Two walks to the next two batters โ Megan Grant and Sharlize Palacios โ pushed the Bruins' first run across home plate. Texas head coach Mike White turned to Citlali Gutierrez in the circle to face Ramirez. She added to her career day with another RBI coming on a fielder's choice groundout to shortstop.
ย
UCLA, with runners on the corners and one out, was unable to score the rest of the inning.
ย
The Bruins return for day two of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament tomorrow morning. UCLA will face San Diego at 11 a.m. (PT) and rematch with Texas at 4 p.m. (PT). There are no available streaming or listening options for these games. Fans will receive free admission upon arrival.
