Brady Powers UCLA to Series Sweep Over Utah

March 10, 2024 | Softball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Maya Brady tied a career high with six runs batted in to lead the No. 16 UCLA softball team to a 12-1 mercy-rule victory over Utah at Easton Stadium Sunday afternoon.
ย
With the win, the Bruins (14-6, 3-0 Pac-12) secure their first series sweep of the season. UCLA recorded 12 hits in the five-inning contest. Brady, Jordan Woolery and Taylor Stephens all notched multi-hit performances.
ย
The fourth grand slam of Brady's career highlighted a seven-run second inning that freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Terry rode to her sixth victory of the season. Woolery and Stephens opened the second with back-to-back singles, and a walk to Seneca Curo loaded the bases for Thessa Malau'ulu who stepped to the plate for the first time in the series.
ย
On an 0-2 count, Malau'ulu dropped low in her stance and golfed a changeup into shallow right field to score two runs and give the Bruins the lead for the rest of the day. Ramsey Suarez entered to pinch hit the next at-bat and smoked a ball off the glove of Utah shortstop Shonty Passi to score another run.
ย
A hit-by-pitch to Jadelyn Allchin loaded the bases for Brady. The shortstop got the green light on a 3-0 count and smashed a grand slam to left-center field, stretching UCLA's lead to 7-1.
ย
The Bruins added four more runs in their next turn at the plate in the bottom half of the third. The two-out rally began with an eight-pitch walk to Malau'ulu, a single laced through the 5-6 hole by Janelle Meoño and another walk to Allchin. Brady dug into the box next with the bases loaded for the second time in the game.
ย
Brady blasted a ball with top spin past the Utah first baseman and into right field. Utah's Sophie Jacquez misplayed the ball as it skirted to the outfield wall which allowed all three runs to score. The next play, Sharlize Palacios hit a knuckle ball to Utah second baseman Aliya Belarde that popped out of the mitt and brought home Brady to extend the Bruins' lead to 11-1.
ย
UCLA's final run of the game was scored in the fourth inning on a delayed double steal attempt with runners on the corners. Pinch runner Lauren Hatch drew the Utes into a pickle which gave Stephens plenty of time to race home. The inning began with three straight hits on eight pitches off the bats of Woolery, Stephens and Madison Pacini.
ย
In the circle, Terry did not a runner into scoring position after surrendering a home run to Utah's Julia Jimenez in the second inning. She finished the game with three strikeouts and four hits allowed.
ย
After one day of rest, UCLA returns to Easton Stadium for a Tuesday night contest versus Rutgers at 7 p.m. (PT).
