Allchin Delivers Walk-Off Hit in Bruins’ 7-6 Win Over Rutgers

March 13, 2024 | Softball

LOS ANGELES – Jadelyn Allchin laced a line drive into the right-center gap to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in the No. 15 UCLA softball team's 7-6 win versus Rutgers at Easton Stadium Tuesday night.

The Bruins (15-6, 3-0 Pac-12) now have three seven-inning walk-off wins this year. Allchin's clutch heroics tonight came just three days after she knocked in the game-tying run with two outs in the seventh inning of the UCLA's game two victory over Utah last Saturday.

Pitcher Kaitlyn Terry earned her seventh win of the season despite allowing three runs to the Scarlet Knights (15-10) in the top of the seventh inning which tied the game.

After punching out her first batter of the inning, Terry loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch and two walks. A single by Rutgers' LA Matthews scored a run to cut UCLA's lead to two and loaded the bases, putting the game-tying run in scoring position. Morgan Smith, who started the game in the circle for Rutgers but moved to center field after 3.1 innings, smacked a two-RBI base hit into center field to knot the game at 6-6.

Terry hit the next batter she faced on a 3-2 count, which filled the pillows with Scarlet Knights again. The freshman southpaw limited the damage, however, striking out the next two batters on eight pitches.

UCLA's 6-7-8 hitters were due up to lead off the bottom half of the seventh. Thessa Malau'ulu, pinch hitter Madison Pacini and Janelle Meoño all worked walks to put the game-winning run 60 feet away from home. The Bruins' lead-off hitter, Jadelyn Allchin, smacked the first pitch she saw and seconds later was mobbed by her teammates rounding first base.

UCLA's offense totaled 10 base hits. Sharlize Palacios, who took the night off behind the dish and was penciled in as the designated player, went a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI base hits, including a double. Palacios' performance marked the 11th time in her career she's recorded three hits in a single game. Also logging two RBI base hits was reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week Maya Brady. Thessa Malau'ulu scored two runs after reaching base via walk on two long at-bats. Junior Jayla Castro started at catcher and logged her first base hit of the season with a single into left field in the fourth inning.

The Bruins' top of the lineup manufactured the game's first run in the bottom of the first. A walk to Brady and back-to-back hits into center field by Palacios and Megan Grant loaded the bases for first baseman Jordan Woolery. Woolery bounced a ball to the Rutgers shortstop who took a force out at third base and conceded a run scoring.

Rutgers struck back the next top half inning off UCLA starting pitcher Jada Cecil who began her outing with a hit-by-pitch and walk. One batter later, Scarlet Knights' right fielder Kayla Bock hit a three-run, line-drive home run that snuck over the right-center field fence.

Palacios' RBI double in the bottom of the third inning chipped into the Rutgers lead, 3-2. One batter later, Woolery evened the score on a scorcher through the right side. UCLA took the lead the next inning on back-to-back RBI hits by Brady and Palacios.

UCLA plays two more home games at Easton Stadium this Saturday in a double-header with LMU. Game one between the Bruins and Lions is scheduled for 12 p.m. (PT).
