Softball Mercy-Rules LMU Twice on Saturday

March 16, 2024 | Softball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The No. 15 UCLA softball team posted a pair of 8-0 mercy-rule victories over LMU, both in five innings, at Easton Stadium Saturday afternoon.
ย
The Bruins (17-6, 3-0) totaled 17 hits and limited the Lions (12-14) to just three in each game. UCLA's arms of Taylor Tinsley and Kaitlyn Terry teamed up for two complete-game shutouts.
ย
In game one, Sharlize Palacios went 2-for-2 with five runs batted in. Four of those RBI came on one swing of the bat with a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning which put the mercy rule into effect. The blast marked Palacios' sixth career grand slam and secondย in a UCLA uniform.
ย
Redshirt senior Janelle Meoño tied a career high with three runs scored in game one.
ย
Palacios also opened the scoring in the first inning. Meoño, who bat lead-off in both games today, hit a hot shot that ricocheted off the LMU third baseman's glove to open the frame. A groundout by Maya Brady deep in the hole to the second baseman allowed Meoño to advance to second base. Palacios hit another to the hot corner that went into right field to bring home Meoño.
ย
Tinsley turned in four strikeouts and allowed just three hits in her outing. The only trouble the sophomore pitcher faced came in the third inning when she hit back-to-back batters with two outs. That was the only time a runner reached scoring position on Tinsley. She quickly got out of the inning with a fly out on the first pitch to the next batter she faced.
ย
The Bruins added their second run in the bottom half of the third. A four-pitch walk to Meoño and single by Jadelyn Allchin put the wheels in motion. A fly out by Brady allowed Meoño to move up to third. One batter later, Megan Grant smoked a ball past a diving LMU shortstop into left field which scored Meoño for her second run of the game.
ย
Prior to Palacios' grand slam in the fourth, UCLA pieced together three straight hits, the last of which was an RBI double for Thessa Malau'ulu for her fourth two-bagger of the year. A walk to Meoño loaded the bases for Allchin who hit a fly ball to center field deep enough to score Seneca Curo tagging up from third base.
ย
Savannah Pola was the star of game two, going 2-for-2 with a season-high three RBI. Pola's final hit of the game scored the mercy-rule, walk-off runs in the bottom of the fifth. The performance marked Pola's second multi-RBI game and third multi-hit game of the season.
ย
Terry posted five more zeroes in game two. The freshman southpaw struck out five batters and gave up three hits and two walks. Terry found trouble in the third after loading the bases with no outs on two singles and a walk. Terry induced two groundouts โ€“ one to Taylor Stephens at second base and one to Maya Brady at shortstop โ€“ that both went to home for force outs, preventing the Lions from scoring. She ended the inning with a high flyout to Malau'ulu at third base on a full count.
ย
Grant sparked the Bruins' offense in the first inning with a two-RBI triple into the left field corner. LMU's first baseman muffed a routine groundball hit by Jordan Woolery on the next play which allowed Grant to scamper home, pushing UCLA's lead to 3-0.
ย
UCLA opened the fourth inning with four consecutive base hits off the bats of Woolery, Stephens, Jayla Castro and Pola. Pola's knock into the left-center gap stretched the Bruins' lead to 4-0. The Bruins scored two more runs in the inning on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Allchin and sacrifice fly by Brady.
ย
Both Kate Blunt and Mia McNulty saw the field for the first time in their collegiate careers in the fifth inning. Blunt played at shortstop while McNulty saw reps behind the dish as well as logged her first at-bat as a Bruin.
ย
UCLA travels to Seattle for its first Pac-12 Conference road trip next week at Washington (19-3, 3-1). The Bruins open the series Friday, March 22 at 5 p.m. (PT). All three games will be available for viewing on the Pac-12 Networks.
