Softball’s Comeback Falls Short in 6-5 Loss at Washington

March 22, 2024 | Softball

SEATTLE – The No. 14 UCLA softball team's seventh-inning rally fell short in a 6-5 loss to No. 8 Washington at Husky Softball Stadium Friday night.

Shortstop Maya Brady went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and catcher Sharlize Palacios recorded her eighth home run of the season.

The Bruins (17-7, 3-1 Pac-12) entered the seventh trailing the Huskies (21-4, 5-2 Pac-12) by two runs, 6-4. Thessa Malau'ulu opened the top half on a full-count walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout. The next batter, Jadelyn Allchin, pushed Malau'ulu across home on a sacrifice fly to center field to cut Washington's lead to just one.

The tying run, Brady, provided some late-game dramatics. With two outs, Brady beat out an infield single after initially being ruled out. A replay review overturned the call. Brady advanced to second on a wild pitch, and on a 3-2 walk to Palacios, stole third base. Brady was initially ruled out again by third base umpire Mark Carver, but the call was overturned to keep the game alive for a second time. Lindsay Lopez, the Huskies' fourth pitcher of the game, struck out Megan Grant on a full count for the final out.

Washington jumped out to a 4-0 lead on five hits in the first inning off Bruins' starting pitcher Taylor Tinsley. Alana Johnson scored the first runs of the game on a home run to left-center field. Two more runs came across on an RBI double by Brooke Nelson and RBI single by Sydney Stewart. Freshman Kaitlyn Terry was subbed in for relief and retired the final out of the inning.

The Bruins responded in the top half of the second with three hits, the last of which was an RBI double by Thessa Malau'ulu off the left field wall. Seneca Curo was thrown out on the play at home plate for the final out of the inning. The hit marked Malau'ulu's fifth double of the season, which is tied with Grant for second most on the team.

A 40-minute rain delay occurred with two outs in the bottom of the second inning. Terry ended the inning with two strikeouts – one on each side of the delay.

Terry finished her outing with 5.1 innings pitched, five strikeouts and one earned run.

UCLA continued chipping into Washington's lead with a two-out rally in the third. A double by Brady to left center brought up Palacios, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week. Palacios powered a two-run shot to center field for her team-leading eighth home run of the season.

The Huskies stretched their lead back to two runs in the bottom of the third. A delayed steal attempt by Kinsey Fiedler running at second base drew a throw from Palacios at home plate. Bruins' second baseman Seneca Curo threw wide left of Malau'ulu at third, which allowed Fiedler to take two more bases and score.

Fiedler later homered to leadoff the bottom of the fifth, giving Washington a 6-3 and six outs away from the win.

Rain started to fall heavily in the top of the sixth as Huskies' reliever Sidne Peters walked the bases loaded to begin the inning. However, the Bruins were only able to get one run out of the opportunity on a ground out double play by Savannah Pola.

UCLA aims to even the series with Washington tomorrow afternoon 2 p.m. (PT) at Husky Softball Stadium. Fans can watch the game live on Pac-12 Washington.
