Terry Muzzles Huskies in 6-0 Shutout Victory
March 24, 2024 | Softball
SEATTLE โ Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Terry tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout to help the No. 14 UCLA softball team to a 6-0 victory over No. 8 Washington at Husky Softball Stadium on Saturday.
ย
Terry's performance marked the first shutout by a UCLA freshman versus a top-10 opponent since April 7, 2017, when Rachel Garcia shutout then-No. 1 Oregon. She needed just 81 pitches.
ย
The Bruins (18-8, 4-2 Pac-12) totaled 11 hits, including three home runs. Shortstop Maya Brady notched the eighth two-homer game of her career and second of the season. With the two blasts, Brady moved into sole possession of third place on UCLA's career home runs list with 62, passing Tairia (Mims) Flowers and and Delaney Spaulding.
ย
Jordan Woolery also homered in the contest.
ย
Terry put forth her most dominant outing of the season, allowing just three base runners (two hits and one walk). The Glendale, Ariz. native now sports a 9-0 record and team-leading 2.07 earned run average.
ย
The Bruins' defense also showed out with a pair of double plays. After walking the Huskies' (22-5, 6-2 Pac-12) second batter of the game in the first inning, Terry recorded a strikeout and Sharlize Palacios threw down to second base for a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play.
ย
Washington's last base runner of the game reached in the fourth inning via an Avery Hobson single that tipped off Brady's glove at shortstop and into center field. The very next batter, Jillian Celis, scorched a comebacker to Terry who started a 1-6-3 double play to get out of the inning.
ย
Terry kept the Huskies on a short leash after the fourth, retiring the last 11 batters of the game.
ย
UCLA opened the scoring with a Brady opposite field home run (left field) in the top of the first inning. The top of the order continued to put the pressure on in the second with aย Woolery solo homer.
ย
Thessa Malau'ulu stretched the Bruins' lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Taylor Stephens.
ย
UCLA doubled its lead with a three-run seventh. Malau'ulu opened the inning with a bunt single and was later pushed across home on a pinch-hit, RBI single by Savannah Pola. Brady's second homer of the game was a two-run line shot to right field.
ย
Brady made a stellar play defensively in the bottom of the sixth on a ground ball deep in the hole behind second base. The shortstop made a 360-degree turn and throw on the run to first base for the out.
ย
UCLA returns home next week for a three-game series versus Oregon at Easton Stadium. Game one is scheduled for Thursday, March 28 at 7 p.m. (PT).
