BRUINS TRAVEL TO TEMPE FOR SATURDAY MATCHUP WITH SUN DEVILSย
No. 10 UCLA travels to No. 18 Arizona State for a Saturday, March 9 dual meet at Desert Financial Arena. The meet will be televised live on Pac-12 Network at 1pm MT/12pm PT.
ย
BACK TO THEIR ROOTS ย
The Bruins' trip to Tempe is a homecoming of sorts for graduate student Chloe Lashbrooke and head coach Janelle McDonald. Lashbrooke is a Scottsdale native and Chaparral High School graduate who trained at Gold Medal Gymnastics. McDonald coached for eight years at Desert Lights Gymnastics and earned her degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at Arizona State in 2011. In 2010, she interned with the ASU gymnastics program. ย ย

A LOOK AT THE SUN DEVILS ย
Arizona State, who has won three of its last four dual meets, enters the competition with a No. 18 national ranking. The Sun Devils are also ranked No. 14 on beam, No. 15 on vault and No. 21 on bars. Anaya Smith holds the No. 15 national ranking on vault and has posted five individual victories on the event. She has a season high of 9.95. The Sun Devils have scored 49+ on vault in a program-record 19 consecutive meets and on bars in 18 straight meets, one away from the program record. ย  ย  ย  ย ย

IN THE RANKINGSย
The national rankings are now being determined by National Qualifying Score. UCLA is Top 10 all across the board, standing at No. 10 overall, No. 6 on beam, No. 7 on vault and floor, and No. 10 on bars. Individually, Selena Harris ranks in the Top 25 on all events and the all-around. She is 10th in the all-around, sixth on vault and bars, and 25th on beam and floor. ย Chae Campbell ranks 11th on vault, Nya Reed is tied for 20th on floor, and Emma Malabuyo is tied for 25th on beam. Emily Lee is just on the cusp of the Top 25, sitting .005 out of 25th at 27th. ย ย

LAST TIME OUTย
UCLA's 49.4 scores on uneven bars and balance beam proved to be the difference, as the Bruins defeated No. 24 Stanford, 197.175-196.725, on March 1. The Bruins took the lead from the start and never relinquished it after scoring 49.4 on bars to Stanford's 49.025 on vault in rotation one. The Cardinal stayed within 0.325 going into the final rotation, but their 49.275 on floor was no match for the Bruins' 49.4 on beam, as UCLA hit all six routines for 9.825 or higher, led by Emma Malabuyo's anchor score of 9.925.ย

NEWCOMERS JOIN FLOOR PARTY ย ย
UCLA showcased its depth on floor at Stanford, as three Bruins made their season debuts on floor. Freshman Alex Irvine and graduate Chloe Lashbrooke were added late into the lineup but performed well, with Irvine scoring 9.75 on her first-ever competitive floor routine and Lashbrooke hitting for a 9.825 in her first competitive routine of the year. Additionally, sophomore Maddie Anyimi performed an exhibition routine and scored 9.775, her highest mark ever on floor. Anyimi also stepped in late into the vault lineup and scored a season-high 9.8. Irvine competed on vault as well, for just the third time this season, and scored 9.775. She also hit a 9.825 exhibition routine on bars. ย

LEE-DOFF LOVE ย ย
Junior Emily Lee has mastered the leadoff position on beam since 2023 and has become just as solid as the leadoff on other events this year as well. On beam, she averages 9.867 as the first gymnast up and has scored 9.9 or higher five times, including a career-high-tying 9.95 Feb. 25 vs. Cal and last week's 9.9 at Stanford. On vault, she averages 9.847 and picked up her first-ever vault victory with a 9.9 against Cal on the first routine of the meet. She has stuck her Yurchenko full five times this year, including her last three in a row. Lee has been the leadoff on floor in the last three meets and scored a career-high-tying 9.9 against Cal, her third 9.9+ score of the meet. She went 9.875 at Stanford last weekend. ย

FLYIN' FRIDA ย ย
Senior Frida Esparza has hit her stride on uneven bars, taking first place in each of her last two meets. She has competed for the Bruins in five straight meets and is averaging 9.885 in those five meets, with a career-high 9.95 on Feb. 25, a 9.925 at Oregon State on Feb. 9 and a 9.9 last week at Stanford among her scores. Esparza has also performed excellent beam routinesin the last two meets, tying her career-high with a 9.9 on Feb. 25 and hitting an exhibition routine at Stanford for a 9.85. ย  ย  ย  ย

ANDRES ON FIRE ย ย
After seeing very limited action the last two seasons due to injuries, graduate student Emma Andres is having her most successful season in her fifth year. She has competed on floor in the Bruins' last five meets and is averaging 9.880, with two scores of 9.925, most recently Feb. 25 against Cal. She has competed on beam in the last eight meets and has a high of 9.9 in her competitive debut on beam at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad and three other scores above 9.8. ย  ย  ย  ย ย

REED ALL ABOUT IT ย ย
Graduate transfer and six-time All-American Nya Reed has made a seamless transition into the Bruin program, competing on vault and floor in eight meets so far this season and ranking No. 20 in the nation on floor. She captured her first Pac-12 Specialist of the Week award on Feb. 6 after her winning performances against Arizona, when she scored 9.95 on vault and 9.975 on floor. She averages a team-high 9.919 on floor and is tied for the team lead with six scores of 9.9 or higher on the event. Reed also has two floor victories, most recently at Stanford last week. ย  ย  ย

CAMPBELL CAN DO ALL ย ย
Known for her unmatched Yurchenko full vault and stunning performances on floor exercise, senior Chae Campbell has put her uneven bars and balance beam prowess on full display as well the last two meets, scoring 9.875 on both events at Stanford and earning career-highs on both events against Cal. Campbell led off the Bruins' uneven bars rotation against Cal with a career-high 9.95, earning a perfect 10 from one of the two judges. Her previous career-high was 9.9, achieved just three times. The 9.95 also gave her her first career victory on uneven bars. Returning to balance beam for the first time since a sub-9 score at the season opener, Campbell showed her freshman year first-team All-America form, tying her career-high with a 9.925. Campbell has been outstanding as usual on vault, ranking 11th nationally despite competing a 9.95 start-valued vault. She holds a season average of 9.891 on the event and a NQS of 9.910 and has scored a perfect 9.95 twice this year and seven times in her career. She is tied for the team lead with three vault victories, including last week at Stanford. ย

HARRIS JOINS ELITE COMPANY ย
Sophomore Selena Harris became just the third Bruin ever to total three or more 9.95s in a meet in three consecutive competitions when she did so against Arizona Feb. 4, Oregon State Feb. 9 and Utah Feb. 19. The only other Bruins to ever do it were Jordan Chiles (2023) and Mohini Bhardwaj (2001). Harris already has the fifth-most meets with three or more 9.95s, with three. Jeanette Antolin holds the UCLA record with seven, followed by Chiles and Jamie Dantzscher with five and Kyla Ross with four. Also with three are Bhardwaj, Kristen Maloney and Kate Richardson.

Harris has continued to impress in her sophomore season, averaging 39.594 in the all-around, with a season and career-high of 39.775 set Feb. 2. She has hit all 91 of her routines in her short career. In her last five meets, she has averaged 39.610, with 10 scores of 9.95 or higher. She leads the team with 22 event victories, 28 Top 3 finishes, 22 scores of 9.9 or higher and 14 scores of 9.95 or higher. Harris has scored season-bests of 10.0 on vault, 9.975 on beam and floor and 9.95 on bars.ย

KATE THE GREAT ย ย
Katelyn Rosen is proving to be one of the top freshmen in the nation this season, averaging 39.410 in the all-around, with a high of 39.525 set Feb. 25 against Cal. Rosen has competed in the all-around in five of the last six meets and on at least two events in every meet. She has posted season-highs of 9.95 on floor, 9.925 on bars, 9.9 on vault and 9.85 on beam and season averages of 9.8 or higher on all four events. She has won Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Week twice this year. ย  ย  ย ย

GIMME MOORS ย ย
Junior Brooklyn Moors has been one of the Bruins' most spectacular performers on floor exercise, earning scores of 9.9 or better in five meets, with three scores of 9.95, most recently at Oregon State on Feb. 9. Moors has two event victories on the year, winning floor at Oregon State and against Washington. The 2020 Canadian Olympian has competed on floor in eight meets and averages 9.866. ย  ย  ย  ย

CAMPBELL, FRAZIER, REED NOMINATED FOR AAI AWARDย
Chae Campbell, Margzetta Frazier and Nya Reed were announced as nominees for the AAI Award, presented to the nation's top senior gymnast. Campbell is an eight-time All-American and seven-time All-Pac-12 honoree. As a freshman in 2021, she won the Pac-12 floor exercise title and was named the Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year. She has scored a pair of perfect 10s on floor exercise and has a total of seven career perfect scores on vault, including two this season. A four-time All-American and the 2021 Pac-12 uneven bars co-champion, Frazier has hit 139 of 140 routines without a fall in her collegiate career, including an incredible streak of 133 consecutive hit routines. She holds career-best marks of 39.550 in the all-around, 9.95 on uneven bars and floor exercise, 9.925 on balance beam and 9.875 on vault. Reed is in her first year as a graduate student at UCLA after competing at Florida from 2019-22. Reed was a six-time All-American as a Gator and earned All-SEC honors in 2022, along with WCGA Scholastic All-American acclaim in 2020. She has competed on vault and floor for the Bruins in eight meets this season, holding a Top 20 national ranking on floor. She has scored season-highs of 9.975 on floor and 9.95 on vault and has career-bests of 10.0 on floor, set twice in 2022, and 9.975 on vault. ย

NEW FACESย
UCLA welcomes a graduate transfer and four freshmen onto the squad in 2024. Nya Reed brings four years of experience at the University of Florida, where she was a six-time All-American with career-high scores of 9.975 on vault and 10.0 on floor. The freshman class is a mix of national team members in Sydney Barros and Katelyn Rosen and Level 10 standouts in Paige Anastasi and Alex Irvine. Barros is a three-time U.S. national team member and current Puerto Rican all-around champion. Rosen was a member of the 2020 U.S. National Team and the 2022 U.S. Classic floor champion. Anastasi is a four-time Level 10 nationals competitor and the 2023 Region 6 all-around, vault and bars champion. Irvine won a bronze medal on vault at the 2022 Level 10 nationals.ย

Reed, Rosen and Anastasi have competed in at least six of UCLA's meets this season. Reed averages 9.919 on floor exercise and ranks No. 20 nationally. Her season average on vault is 9.822. Rosen averages 9.8 or higher on all four events and has highs of 9.95 on floor, 9.925 on bars, 9.9 on vault, 9.85 on beam and 39.525 in the all-around. Anastasi has a high of 9.825 on vault. Irvine has earned a spot in the competitive lineup twice on bars and hit an exhibition routine for a 9.9 on Feb. 25. She has competed three times on vault, with a high of 9.85 in her competitive debut at Oregon State, and once on floor at Stanford, where she scored 9.75. ย

BACK FOR MOREย
The Bruins returned the services of three 2023 seniors - Emma Andres, Margzetta Frazier and Chloe Lashbrooke - for their extra year of Covid-19 eligibility. Andres competed in three meets as a freshman in 2020 and in every meet in 2021 before an injury derailed her 2022 season. She came back in 2023 to perform a total of three exhibition routines, scoring highs of 9.850 on beam and 9.700 on floor in the regular season finale. She has earned a spot in the beam lineup the last eight meets and on floor in the last five. She made her competitive debut on beam at the Collegiate Quad and scored a 9.9, and in her first competitive floor routine of the season against Arizona, she scored a career-high 9.925. Andres is averaging 9.880 on floor. Four-time All-American and 2021 Pac-12 bars champion Margzetta Frazier is back in her sixth year with the program after redshirting in 2022 with a foot fracture. She went 133 routines in her career before her first-ever fall. Frazier's streak lasted from Jan. 4, 2019 to Jan. 21, 2024. Frazier has competed on uneven bars in every meet this year and has scored season-highs of 9.9 twice. Last year, Frazier finished fourth overall on floor at the NCAA Championships with a career-best 9.950. After missing all of the 2021 season and most of 2022 with an Achilles injury, Lashbrooke came back in 2023 to compete on floor in three meets and exhibition in two others, posting a high of 9.875 against Iowa State. She made her 2024 debut March 1 at Stanford and scored 9.825 on floor. She holds a career average of 9.838 on the event.ย

OLYMPIC DREAMSย
The Bruins are without the services of Jordan Chiles and Ana Padurariu in 2024 as they pursue their Olympic dreams. Chiles is training for her second Olympic spot after winning team silver at the 2020 Olympics and team gold and vault and floor silver at the 2022 World Championships. She also recently won team gold, vault silver and all-around bronze at the Pan American Games. The nine-time All-American had a banner 2023 season, winning the NCAA and Pac-12 bars and floor titles and scoring five perfect 10s (three on bars, two on floor). She was also named the WCGA West Region Gymnast of the Year and College Gym News Sportswoman of the Year. Padurariu is training in hopes of qualifying for her first Olympic berth with Team Canada. A member of Canada's national team from 2015-20 and a World silver medalist on beam in 2018, Padurariu was on the 2020 Olympic path before an ankle injury changed her course. After a successful 2023 collegiate campaign, during which she scored career-highs of 9.95 on bars and beam, Padurariu returned to the elite scene, demoing at the 2023 Canadian National Championships in May and competing at Elite Canada this February.ย

Emma Malabuyo will also be pursuing an Olympic berth under the Philippines flag but is remaining on the team and competing with the Bruins between qualifying competitions. She finished second on floor exercise at her first World Cup meet in Cairo and earned the maximum 30 points towards qualifying and earned 14 points at Cottbus last weekend. After two World Cup events, she sits in second place in the qualifying standings. She is set to compete next in Baku on Mar. 7 and will not be available at Arizona State. Malabuyo made history for the Philippines this past summer at the Asian Championships, recording the highest-ever placement by a Filipina gymnast with her silver medal-winning performance on floor exercise. She scored 13.166 in the event finals, just 0.067 off first place. She also competed in the balance beam final, placing fifth overall with a score of 12.166. The Asian Championships were Malabuyo's first elite competition since the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials, after which she was selected as an alternate for the Olympic Games. ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย

LOOKING AHEAD
The Bruins will wrap up regular season play against Clemson on Saturday, Mar. 16 at 2pm PT. Clemson is in its first year of competition and has been impressively ranked in the Top 36 all season. The Tigers are led by head coach Amy Smith, who helped lead UCLA to its first-ever NCAA women's gymnastics championship in 1997. The meet is also Senior Day for eight Bruin gymnasts - true seniors Chae Campbell, Frida Esparza, Katie McNamara and Sara Ulias and graduates Emma Andres, Margzetta Frazier, Chloe Lashbrooke and Nya Reed. ย
