Allchin Spurs Bruins to 6-2 Win Over Utah
March 08, 2024 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – Jadelyn Allchin went 2-for-4 and hit her third home run of the season to help the No. 16 UCLA softball team to a 6-2 victory over Utah in its Pac-12 Conference opener at Easton Stadium Friday night.
Sophomore pitcher Taylor Tinsley twirled 6.2 innings of shutout ball, struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits to earn her fourth win of the season.
The Bruins (12-6, 1-0 Pac-12) opened the game with a four spot in the bottom of the first inning and saw 19 pitches before the Utes (14-7, 0-1 Pac-12) recorded their first out.
Allchin led off the inning with a single down the right field line that booted off the Utah right fielder's leg, allowing her to speed into third base with a head-first slide. Redshirt senior Maya Brady homered to opposite field (left field) on the very next pitch to give UCLA a 2-0 lead.
Utah starting pitcher Mariah Lopez walked three of the next four batters, but induced a ground ball double play to bring designated player Ramsey Suarez to the plate with two outs and two in scoring position. On a 2-2 count, Suarez recorded her first double of the year with a shot into the right-center gap to score another pair of runs.
Tinsley dominated in her outing, allowing only one runner to reach scoring position. She posted two three-up, three down innings and punched out at least one Ute in six of the seven innings she pitched in. Tinsley held Utah's Haley Denning, the Pac-12 batting average leader entering today with a .529 clip, hitless in a 0-for-4 showing with a strikeout.
Janelle Meoño – the Bruins' nine hitter – led off the fifth inning with a slap single that dropped right over the head of Utah third baseman Karlie Davison into shallow left field. Allchin stepped to the plate next and deposited a two-run blast to straightaway center field.
Tinsley was subbed in relief for freshman Kaitlyn Terry going into the sixth inning. Terry walked two batters and allowed two hits against four of the five batters she faced. The last hit Terry gave up was a two-RBI double by Julia Jimenez that was smoked past Brady at shortstop and zoomed into the left-center gap. The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez brought Tinsley back into the circle with two runners in scoring position to escape the inning. Tinsley worked efficiently, recording the next two outs on just four pitches with a first-pitch groundout and a three-pitch strikeout looking.
Tinsley sealed the game with a strikeout in a scoreless seventh inning.
The Bruins take on the Utes in game two at Easton Stadium tomorrow night at 6 p.m. (PT). The game is available for viewing on the UCLA Livestream. UCLA will be honoring its 1984 NCAA Championship team throughout the evening.
