No. 12 Softball Downs No. 20 California, 3-1
April 13, 2024 | Softball
LOS ANGELES โ Pitcher Taylor Tinsley struck out nine batters in a complete-game effort to lead the No. 12 UCLA softball team to a 3-1 victory over No. 20 California at Easton Stadium Friday night.
ย
All three of the Bruins' (24-9, 9-3 Pac-12) hits came from the 1-2-3 spots of the lineup. UCLA broke through on Golden Bears (29-12, 4-9 Pac-12) starting pitcher Haylei Archer in the bottom of the third inning.
ย
Following a walk to Janelle Meoño, redshirt senior Maya Brady doubled to California center fielder Mika Lee on a hot ground ball. Lee booted the ball away from herself twice in the outfield which allowed Meoño to score from first base. A wild pitch on the first pitch of Jadelyn Allchin's at-bat moved Brady over to third base. One pitch later, Allchin hit a ball deep to center field to score Brady on a sacrifice fly.
ย
Allchin has converted on all 12 of her RBI opportunities with a runner on third base and less that two outs.
ย
Aside from a solo home run by California's No. 3 hitter in the lineup, Lagi Quiroga, Tinsley successfully danced around the five other hits she allowed. Tinsley faced her first scoring threat in the very first inning when Quiroga doubled with two outs. Seneca Curo fielded a high chopper ground ball on the next play and made a throw on the run โ and in mid-air โ to first base for the third out.
ย
Tinsley thwarted another Golden Bears' scoring opportunity in the third inning with a strikeout on a pitch in the dirt to strand a runner on third base.
ย
California had the game-tying run reach base in the top of the seventh following back-to-back singles by Alyssa Hererra and Kaylee Pond. After punching out her ninth batter of the night, Tinsley displayed her athleticism by fielding a high chopper over her head for the final out of the game. Tinsley did not walk a batter in her outing.
ย
UCLA added a key insurance run for Tinsley in the sixth inning. A triple off the right field wall by Allchin brought Sharlize Palacios up with one out. The Bruins' catcher cashed in with a single up the middle of the infield, stretching the lead to 3-1.
ย
The Bruins go for their fourth Pac-12 series win tomorrow evening, facing the Golden Bears at 5 p.m. (PT) at Easton Stadium. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks with Trey Bender on the call.
