Bruins Take Game One at Oregon State, 6-1
April 05, 2024 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Pitcher Taylor Tinsley struck out a career-high 12 batters to help the No. 12 UCLA softball team to a 6-1 victory over Oregon State at Kelly Field Friday night.
The Bruins (21-8, 7-2) totaled eight hits, including two home runs from Jordan Woolery and Sharlize Palacios. Tinsley limited the Beavers (15-20, 3-7 Pac-12) to just three hits. All three of Oregon State's hits were off the bat of designated player Maddy Clark.
The sophomore right-hander Tinsley struck out at least one batter in each of the first six innings and struck out multiple Beavers in five of the first six innings.
UCLA struck first with three runs in the top of the second. A leadoff homer by Woolery – her fourth big fly of the year – opened the scoring. Back-to-back singles by Megan Grant and Thessa Malau'ulu through the right side of the infield continued the rally. The Bruins' next batter, Seneca Curo, laid down a sacrifice bunt on the first pitch she saw to move the pair into scoring position. Taylor Stephens, making her first start since game three at Washington two weeks ago, smacked a ball that bounced off the center field wall for a double to stretch UCLA's lead to 3-0.
Oregon State scored its only run of the game in the bottom half of the second on Clark's solo homer to left field. Tinsley immediately bounced back against the next batter by getting into an 0-2 count. The Lawrenceville, Ga. native punched out the final two Beavers of the inning on called strike threes and cruised along the next two frames, retiring nine straight since the home run.
After allowing a leadoff single to Clark in the fifth, Tinsley struck out three in a row to quell any hope of a comeback.
Palacios' solo shot came in the top of the third inning. She is now tied with Maya Brady for the team lead in home runs with nine this season. Later in the game, Grant cashed in on a RBI opportunity with a two-out single into right field that scored two more runs and brought the Bruins' lead to 6-1. Grant has recorded 10 multi-hit performances this season and is riding a nine-game hitting streak which is UCLA's longest of the year.
Tinsley struck out two more looking in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, her defense helped closed the game with a 4-6-3 double play to bring Oregon State to its final out.
UCLA looks to secure its third series win of Pac-12 play against Oregon State tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. (PT). The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks with Elise Woodward and UCLA Athletic Hall of Famer Natasha Watley on the call.
