Bruins Beat Beavers, 5-2, to Secure Series Win

April 06, 2024 | Softball

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 12 UCLA softball team homered twice in a 5-2 victory against Oregon State at Kelly Field Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, the Bruins (22-8, 8-2 Pac-12) secure their third series win of the season and improve their winning streak to five games. Catcher Sharlize Palacios matched a career high in hits with her 3-for-3 day. Two of Palacios' hits bounced off the outfield wall. The UCLA backstop also threw a runner out attempting to steal in the bottom of the first.

The Beavers (15-21, 3-7 Pac-12) scored both of their two runs on a two-run homer by pinch hitter Tiara Westbrook in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Jadelyn Allchin opened the scoring for the Bruins in the top of the first with a solo blast on the first pitch she saw. Allchin's homer marked her fourth of the year. The next batter, Sharlize Palacios, hit a ball off the top of the left field wall for a double and came around to score on another double by Taylor Stephens. Stephens now has two RBI doubles this series.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Kaitlyn Terry got the ball in the circle for UCLA and blanked Oregon State for the first four innings. Terry allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters to improve her record to a flawless 10-0.

Redshirt senior Seneca Curo added to the Bruins' lead the next inning with her first home run of the season on a solo shot to left field. Curo's bat stayed hot in the top of the fourth with a single into right field to put two on base with no outs. After Janelle Meoño laid down a sacrifice bunt to move a pair into scoring position, Maya Brady hit a deep fly ball to center field which allowed Thessa Malau'ulu to tag up and stretch UCLA's lead to 4-0.

UCLA scored its final run of the game with two outs in the top of the fifth. Palacios led off the inning with a single up the middle, and a walk to Stephens put two on base for Malau'ulu. With two outs, Malau'ulu laid down a bunt which resulted in a throwing error by Beavers' pitcher Ellie Garcia which went into right field foul territory. Palacios' pinch runner, Lauren Hatch, raced around the bases and scored on the play.

Defensively, Malau'ulu put on a solid performance at the hot corner with five assists on ground outs to third base.

UCLA had six deep fly balls come within 5-10 feet of being home runs that died in the inwards breeze and thick, moist Pacific Northwest air.

The Bruins go for the series sweep versus the Beavers at Kelly Field tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. (PT). The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. Elise Woodward and UCLA Athletic Hall of Famer Natasha Watley will be on the call.
