Bruins Fall Short in Oregon Rubber Match, 6-3

LOS ANGELES โ Oregon recorded a 6-3 win over the UCLA baseball team on the strength of a five-run third in Sunday's rubber match series finale at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
After that third-inning outburst, UCLA (12-17, 5-10 Pac-12) outscored the Ducks (22-8, 8-4) by a margin of 3-1 for the rest of the contest, but the early deficit proved too large to overcome.
Freshmen Roch Cholowsky (2-3, BB) and Mulivai Levu (2-4, BB) both had multi-hit efforts to pace the Bruins offensively. Junior DH Jack Holman added a solo homer, his second roundtripper of the year.
UCLA's bullpen finished off a strong collective weekend with another outstanding performance on Sunday, as the trio of freshman Justin Lee, senior Caedon Kottinger, and graduate Rashad Ruff teamed up to allow just three hits and one run over 5 2/3 innings.
All five of Oregon's extra-base hits in the game came during the decisive third-inning rally, including home runs from Jacob Walsh and Maddox Molony.
The Bruins answered with back-to-back run-scoring innings starting in the fourth. That stretch was started off with Holman's bomb, a shot to center that came on a 1-0 offering from Oregon starter Kevin Seitter.
UCLA put two more on the board in the fifth, with Duce Gourson driving in Malakhi Knight with an opposite-field base hit before graduate catcher Quintt Landis wore an 0-1 pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run.
The Bruins had chances to get on the scoreboard further in the late innings, but couldn't come up with a big hit. UCLA got four runners aboard in the seventh, but came up with a zero due to a double play. The Bruins then got their first two batters aboard in the eighth, but left them both stranded.
UCLA returns to action on Tuesday night, hosting Pepperdine at 6 p.m. PT in the last of a four-game homestand at JRS.
