May 11, 2024 | Track & Field

BOULDER, Colo. - UCLA Track and Field capped off day two of the Pac-12 Championships on Saturday evening at Potts Field in Boulder, Colo.

The Bruins captured the women's 3000m steeplechase title and two podium finishes in the men's hammer and women's shot put. UCLA also earned qualifications in nine running events for Sunday's finals and put additional points on the board in the men's pole vault, women's shot put, women's 3000m steeplechase, women's heptathlon, and women's high jump.

Junior Mia Kane (10:19.81) secured the Pac-12 title in the women's 3000m steeplechase, the first in program history. Freshman Ailish Hawkins (11:34.29) and sophomore Bella Browne (11:36.07) also scored in the event.

UCLA throwers continued to impress with strong performances in the men's hammer and women's shot put. To begin the day, junior Kris Emig broke the all-time UCLA record twice in his first two attempts of the men's hammer final, his second (71.03m, 233-00) marking the first time a Bruin surpassed 70 meters in the event. He placed third in the Conference.

Graduate student Lea Riedel also placed third in the Conference with a mark of 16.76m (55-00) in the women's shot put. Graduate student Natalie Ramirez also scored four points with a fifth-place finish.

Junior Yanla Ndjip-Nyemeck qualified for the women's 100m hurdles final (13.09), finishing second in her heat and third overall in the preliminary round. On the men's side, freshman Davis Davis-Lyric and senior Aiden Lieb qualified for the men's 100m hurdles final.

Runners in the 400m race were next to qualify. On the women's side, junior Aly Conyers (53.08) placed eighth overall, and senior Antonie Nortje (45.55) finished sixth in the men's race.

Kaylen Fletcher ran a time of 11.50 in the women's 100m to move on to Sunday's final, while graduate student Angus Harrington (1:49.23), and seniors Kate Jendrezak (2:03.64) and Rose Pittman (2:04.79) qualified for the men's and women's 800m finals, respectively.

Other UCLA scorers on the day were sophomore Hunter O'Brien in the men's pole vault, junior Sydney Johnson in the women's heptathlon, and graduate student Julia Jordahl-Henry in the women's high jump.

After day two, the Bruin women collected 56 points with eight of 21 events scored, sitting in second-place heading into the third and final day of competition.
