Friendly Confinesย ย  ย
The Bruins are off to a solid start in home games so far this season, going 12-11 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. UCLA holds advantages in OBP (.384-.365) and walks drawn (130-108). UCLA needs one win this weekend to ensure a non-losing record and two wins for a winning record. The Bruins have had a losing record at home just twice over the last 20 seasons, last occurring in 2014 (11-20).

He Will Roch Youย ย  ย
Frosh third baseman Roch Cholowsky has been on a tear with the bat as of late, hitting seven homers over his last 12 games and slashing .333/.417/.804 over the last 13 games. Roch has compiled nearly half of his extra-base hits for the season (nine of 20) over that same stretch. He is the lone Bruin to appear in every game so far this season. Cholowsky slashed .269/.375/.373 with one home run over the first 36 games of the year.

Active Bruins Against Stanfordย ย  ย
Active Bruins with strong career numbers against the Cardinal include: Toussaint Bythewood (1-2, .667 OBP in 1 GP), Duce Gourson (9-26, 3-3 SB in 6 GP), Jarrod Hocking (3-8 in 2 GP), Luke Jewett (3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 K in 2 apps), and Cody Schrier (.364/.500/.545, 2 XBH in 3 GP).ย

The All-Time Series Against Stanfordย ย  ย ย ย  ย
UCLA is 156-208 all-time against Cardinal, including a 26-28 mark under head coach John Savage. The Bruins and Cardinal have split the last eight head-to-head series, though the Bruins have won just one of their last five home series against Stanford (2018). Since 2012, the road team has won the set seven times in the head-to-head series, compared to just four series wins for the home team (the two did not meet in 2020).

Last Year Against the Cardinalย ย  ย
UCLA dropped two-of-three at then-No. 8 Stanford last year (April 28-30, 2023 at Sunken Diamond):
  • Game 1 โ€” UCLA scored in each of its final three offensive innings, but saw a comeback bid come up agonizingly short in a 6-5 game one loss. The Bruins put together two-spots in the seventh and eighth, scored another in the ninth, but left the game-tying run aboard in the ninth as the contest ended on a Jack Holman flyout to the track in dead center. Daylen Reyes went 3-5 to lead the Bruin bats.ย
  • Game 2 โ€” The Bruins rebounded for a 9-6 win on Saturday, scoring in six separate frames and receiving a strong start from Kelly Austin, who went seven innings while allowing just one earned run. UCLA went ahead for good by the third inning, using a balanced attack and taking advantage of free passes โ€“ Stanford walked 12 batters and hit another โ€“ to keep the Cardinal at arm's length. Eight of UCLA's nine starters reached multiple times, and seven different Bruins had at least one RBI. Austin pitched out of a couple jams in the early portion of the game before settling into a dominant run down the stretch, ending his outing by retiring eight straight.ย
  • Game 3 โ€” UCLA dropped a 10-7 decision in the rubber match, as Stanford's Alberto Rios hit a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning. The Bruins led for most of the game after scoring in four straight innings starting in the second, but the Cardinal chipped away at the lead before wresting the lead on the Rios slam. Duce Gourson (2-5, two RBIs), Darius Perry (2-5, HR), and Jarrod Hocking (3-5) were UCLA's top offensive producers.

Freshman Bats Leading the Home Run Departmentย ย  ย
Freshman infielders Roch Cholowsky (team-high 8 HRs) and Mulivai Levu (6 HRs, third on team) have been leading the Bruins in the long ball department. Entering the year, no Bruin freshman had ever recorded multiple two-homer games under John Savage (since 2005), but Cholowsky and Levu have both accomplished that feat this season. They are the only batters on the 2024 squad with a multi-homer game.ย

Levu Leaves the Yardย ย  ย
UCLA freshman first baseman Mulivai Levu has made a habit of hitting the long ball this year. He hit three home runs during the Cal series, including a two-HR performance in the series finale that made him the first Bruin in 2024 with multiple home runs in one game, and the first Bruin frosh with a two-homer game since current Cincinnati Red Matt McLain had two bombs at Washington State on May 12, 2019. He added two homers in as many innings at Pepperdine on April 30. His seven RBIs in that Pepperdine game are the most by a Bruin since Tommy Beres in the 2022 Pac-12 Tournament.ย

No Slouches in the Nine Holeย ย  ย
UCLA has seen plenty of production from the very bottom of its lineup, as nine-hole hitters have combined to slash an unreal .340/.433/.463 so far this season. Collectively, UCLA's nine-hitters have the best batting average, and second-best OBP and SLG of any spot in the lineup. Players such as Payton Brennan (13-21, .905 SLG), AJ Salgado (5-9, .889 SLG), and Cashel Dugger (8-23, .467 OBP) have all been especially productive at the nine-spot.

Dependable Duceย ย  ย
Duce Gourson has been a constant presence on the basepaths this season, reaching in 44 of 48 games thus far (he was kept off in the final two games of the TCU series, but has reached in all but two contests otherwise). His 38 walks rank fourth in the Pac-12 and his .434 OBP ranks 11th among qualifying league batters. However, he's walked just 16 times in the last 27 games after drawing 22 bases on balls over his first 21 outings. Duce has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games, including a nine-game hitting streak that was broken up at Oregon State. The nine-game streak was a career long and the longest of any Bruin in 2024.

The Week In Reviewย ย  ย
UCLA went 0-4 last week, all on the road against ranked teams:
  • TUE โ€” UCLA doubled up then-No. 16 UC Irvine in the hit column, but absorbed a 9-6 loss at Anteater Ballpark. The Bruins had 12 hits (including seven during a five-run fifth inning) but issued 14 free passes on the mound and struck out a season-high 15 times. UCI went ahead 6-0 on back-to-back crooked numbers to start the game, and never relinquished the lead. AJ Salgado had a game-high three hits, Duce Gourson added a solo homer to extend his hitting streak to nine games, and Roman Martin hit a three-run pinch-hit homer to highlight that big fifth inning for UCLA.ย
  • FRI โ€” Aiden May tossed six scoreless as then-No. 7 Oregon State blanked UCLA 11-0 in game one. It was just the third shutout of the year for the Bruins. OSU scored in each inning except for the first, pulling away with back-to-back three-spots to make it 7-0 by the end of the fourth. Mulivai Levu singled twice and reached base three times for UCLA, and Cody Schrier added two singles in four ABs. OSU hit four homers in the game.ย
  • SAT โ€” Roch Cholowsky hit a grand slam to highlight a five-run third inning, but OSU clinched the series with a 12-11 walk-off win in game two. The Bruins and Beavers went back and forth all night, tying the game on five separate occasions, but OSU brought in the decisive run on a bases-loaded walk in the last of the ninth. UCLA led 6-1 after the the top of the third thanks to that Cholowsky slam, but OSU immediately responded with a go-ahead seven-spot in the bottom half and never trailed again. AJ Salgado (single), Duce Gourson (single), and Cody Schrier (HBP) had game-tying RBIs late in the contest. OSU had five homers, the most in a single game by a Bruin opponent in 2024.
  • SUN โ€” UCLA absorbed a 15-1 loss in the series finale, with the game called after seven innings with the run rule in effect. OSU scored in each of its first five offensive innings, building a 14-run lead by the end of the fifth. UCLA got on the board in the fifth, with AJ Salgado singling home Blake Balsz from second. Justin Lee had the most success of the four Bruin pitchers to see the mound, tossing a 1-2-3 sixth inning.
