UCLA Run-Rules Georgia in Game One, 8-0

LOS ANGELES – No. 6 seed UCLA extended its winning streak to 12 games with an 8-0 mercy-rule victory over 11th-seeded Georgia in game one of the NCAA Super Regional at Easton Stadium on Thursday night.
UCLA (41-10) jumped out to a 1-0 lead when the Bruins' leadoff batter, Maya Brady, hit a home run in the bottom of the first inning.
Brady then doubled to center with two outs and would score the second run of the game in the bottom of the third when Jadelyn Allchin singled through the right side to put UCLA up 2-0.
"I think it was 96 days ago we played this team and we are a different team today then we were back then," said the Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez. "So, just proud of how we're playing ball. Every part of the game. We're pitching, we're hitting (and) we're defending. The goal was to obviously be your best at this point, but I couldn't be more proud. It was spread out throughout the team. There were just great plays, big time hits. But I think all of this starts with Maya Brady sending the message with her first at-bat. That we're here to play, and I think it started. Everybody wanted to hit, which I think really allows for us as coaches to be able to say, 'Well, it's going to be a really fun, we're on attack mode.' I'll just say this. Game one — it's always the biggest one. We've got to be able to appreciate tonight, get some rest, and come back because I guarantee you there'll be a dog fight tomorrow."
The Bruins' defense was solid all night, turning double plays in the first inning and in the fourth and also receiving a SportsCenter Top 10 highlight catch in left center field from Allchin in the second inning.
"It's definitely a relief, but with our outfield I already know that any ball that's in the air, they're gonna catch, regardless, no matter where it's at," said freshman starting pitcher Kaitlyn Terry of her defense. "Right when she laid out, I knew she was going to have it. But, yeah, it takes a big relief off of me."
UCLA put a four-spot on the board in the bottom of the fifth that included some more Bruin Magic that began with another leadoff homer from Brady, her third hit and second longball of the night. Then Allchin singled and Sharlize Palacios was hit by a pitch to put two more runners on base. That brought on the first appearance of the season from pinch runner, Gabriela Jaquez, a standout on the Bruins' women's basketball team. Jaquez joined the softball team on May 13, just ahead of the NCAA Division I Softball Tournament. Allchin and Jaquez both scored after the ninth home run of the year by Jordan Woolery to extend the lead to 6-0.
In the sixth inning, Allchin led off with her third single of the game and advanced to second after Megan Grant drew her second walk of the contest. Both players advanced a base after Woolery grounded out to second. That set up the walk-off heroics for Savannah Pola who rose to the occasion for the second time during the postseason with a single to right field, scoring Allchin and pinch runner, Taylor Stephens, to provide the run-rule victory, just the third in super regional history for UCLA and the first since 2010 when the Bruins went on to win a National Championship. For Pola, it was the second time during the NCAA Tournament that she provided the walk-off hit, as her single in the bottom of the seventh, drove in the winning run in the 7-6 win over Virginia Tech in the Bruins' second win of the Los Angeles Regional.
Brady finished the game going 3-for-4 with two RBI (both solo home runs), scoring three times. The performance marked Brady's 10th mutli-homer performance of her career and second in the postseason (last was vs. Oklahoma at the 2022 Women's College World Series). The Bruins now have two multi-homer performances this season, one apiece by Brady tonight and Sharlize Palacios versus Grand Canyon in game one of NCAA Regionals. Allchin also went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in one Bruin. Pola was the only other Bruin to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. For the game, UCLA hit .370 (10-for-27) while holding Georgia to .211 (4-for-19). The Bruins were incredibly sharp with two outs, hitting .444 (4-for-9) for the game while Georgia was 0-for-5.
The Bulldogs (43-18) managed just four hits (all singles) scattered across six innings and were just 1-for-13 (.077) with runners on base.
In addition to the superb defense by the Bruins, Terry was in command on the mound, improving to 21-1 on the year. She registered five strikeouts while giving out three free passes. But she had her best stuff when it was needed to get the complete game shutout.
The Bruins will host the Bulldogs again tomorrow at Easton Stadium at 7 p.m. (PT) on ESPN2. A win by UCLA will send the Bruins to their 32nd appearance in the Women's College World Series (WCWS).
