Terry Blanks Arizona State, 6-0, With One-Hitter in Pac-12 Tournament Quarterfinals

May 09, 2024 | Softball

STANFORD, Calif. – Kaitlyn Terry threw a one-hit shutout to lead the No. 1 seed UCLA softball team to a 6-0 victory over Arizona State in the Pac-12 Tournament Quarterfinals at Smith Family Stadium Thursday afternoon.

The Bruins (35-10, 17-4 Pac-12) advance into the semifinals and will face No. 5 seed Arizona tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. (PT) on ESPN2.

Terry has now thrown four straight complete games versus the Sun Devils (20-31, 3-21 Pac-12) dating back to last week, pitching all 28.0 innings. The freshman southpaw has gone the distance in each of her last five outings dating back to game two of the Arizona series. Terry has pitched six complete-game shutouts this season.

Today, Terry needed just 78 pitches and face two over the minimum to pick up her team-leading 17th win of the season. The 2024 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year did not allow a runner to reach scoring position in her outing. She worked efficiently with four innings of eight or fewer pitches thrown (five pitches in the second inning, eight pitches in the fifth, seven pitches in the sixth and eight pitches in the seventh). Additionally, Terry did not face more than four batters in any of the seven innings.

The Bruins' offense totaled nine hits, including two apiece from outfielders Jadelyn Allchin and Janelle Meoño. Sophomore Megan Grant recorded a team-high three runs batted in and logged UCLA's only extra-base hit of the night with a two-RBI double off the center field wall. Grant has doubled in each of her four games played at Smith Family Stadium this season.

UCLA opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. Maya Brady worked a seven-pitch walk and Jadelyn Allchin singled to third base to put the Bruins' first two batters of the game on base. The next batter, Sharlize Palacios, singled to center field to bring home Brady who beat the tag applied by Arizona State's catcher. Still with nobody out, Grant reached on a fielder's choice to second base which allowed Allchin plenty of time to sprint home.

The Bruins did the rest of their scoring with a four-run in the fifth inning. A five-pitch walk to Seneca Curo brought up Thessa Malau'ulu who hit a hard groundball to the hot corner. Meoño laid down a beauty of a bunt single to load the pillows for Brady. The redshirt senior shortstop picked up the RBI on a fielder's choice to second base. Allchin then beat out an infield single to first base which scored Malau'ulu from third. Grant's gapper off the wall capped the scoring at 6-0.
