Men's Diving
Tom Daley (UCLA assistant diving coach) earned his fifth overall Olympic medal on Monday. The British diver earned his first career Olympics silver medal, finishing second in the 10m synchronized diving event with fellow Great Britain athlete Noah Williams. With his fifth Olympic medal, Daley has become the most decorated British diver in Olympic history.
Daley and Williams opened the six-round competition strongly, with a first-round score of 53.40, which placed the duo firmly in second place. After no movement up or down the leaderboard the two headed into the fourth round in second on 188.52 points, with their three highest degree of difficulty dives to go.ย In the fourth round, the duo completed 3 and 1/2 somersaults for a fourth-round score of 93.96, their highest score of the competition, and sat 12.84 points behind Lian JuanJie and Yang Hao of China for first place.
Daley and Williams could not quite close the gap in the final two rounds and earned second place overall on the night and finishing with a final score of 463.44. The silver medal was the first of Daley's career. He also owns an Olympic gold medal from Tokyo 2020 and three Olympic bronze medals.

Gemany claimed its first-ever Olympic victory in its opening match against Belgium, winning 83-69 in the national team's first appearance at the Summer Games. Lina Sontag played 13 minutes in the historic win, totaling two rebounds, two steals and a block. Emily Bessoir did not play in Monday's matchup.
ย
Canada fell to France, 75-54, to open Group B play. Nirra Fields (2012-16) saw six minutes of action, scoring once on five shot attempts. Fields secured a rebound, an assist, a steal and a block in her time on the court. Noelle Quinn (2003-07) serves as lead assistant coach for Canada.

Women's Indoor Volleyball
The U.S. women's volleyball national team staff members Karch Kiraly (head coach), Alfee Reft (assistant coach) and Sue Enquist (culture consultant) made a valiant comeback before dropping its Paris Olympics opener to China, 3-2 (25-20, 25-19, 17-25, 20-25, 15-13) on Monday. China received two points in pool play for the victory, while the U.S. earned one point for going five.
ย
The U.S. entered the Olympic Games ranked fifth in the world, while China came in ranked sixth. The U.S. will face No. 9 Serbia on Wednesday, July 31 at 8 a.m. (PT).
ย
Former UCLA outside hitter Iman Ndiaye on the French National Team fell to Serbia in straight sets, 3-0 (17-25, 17-25, 22-25) later in the day. Ndiaye recorded one kill on her two swings, which came in the second set. Ndiaye and Team France look to bounce back Thursday, Aug. 1, facing China at 12 p.m. (PT).
Women's Water Polo
The U.S. women's water polo team suffered just their second loss at the Olympic Games over the last 12 years, dropping a 13-11 match to Spain on Monday. All three Bruins on Team USA played and all three scored for the second straight game.
ย
Bea Ortiz turned in a stellar performance for Spain, scoring five goals in the win. Team USA led 3-2 at the end of the first period. Spain stepped in front 4-3 for their first advantage of the game in the second period, and then it was Team USA chasing the Spaniards for the rest of the quarter. Spain took a 6-5 lead into the break. They scored the first goal of the third period, but UCLA's Rachel Fattal scored a power-play goal to cut the deficit to 7-6. Ortiz connected on four goals in the period to help Spain build a large cushion at 11-6 with 3:31 to play.
ย
Team USA showed their resilience as they began to battle back. The Bruins' Tara Prentice and Maddie Musselman scored back-to-back goals to knock the deficit down to three. Team USA scored with seconds remaining to cut it to 11-9 after three periods. The Americans pulled to within one goal with 5:35 to play in the match, at 11-10. Spain came back with a goal just moments later and then thwarted multiple power-play tries for Team USA. Spain added another goal with less than 20 seconds to play, followed by aย 7-on-6 goal for the Americans that didn't factor in the decision, as Spain secured the two-goal win.
ย
Musselman added a rebound, Prentice had a rebound and two field blocks, while Fattal chipped in one steal and one rebound. Team USA returns to the pool on Wednesday when they meet Italy at 6:30 p.m. local time (9:30 a.m. PT). That water polo match is currently scheduled to air on USA Network on a 30-minute delay, but will stream live on Peacock.
Women's Tennis
Bruins were undefeated Monday at Roland Garros, as Jean-Julien Rojer (2000-02) and Ena Shibahara (2017, 2018) advanced across three doubles draws.
ย
It was a two-win day for Shibahara, whose women's match alongside Shuko Aoyama was pushed back after Sunday's action went long. The Japanese pair made quick work of Romanians Ana Bogdan and Jaqueline Cristian, logging a 6-2, 6-3 victory. A marathon was needed to determine Shibahara's second contest, but she ultimately triumphed with Kei Nishikori in mixed play. The tandem traded sets with the French combination of Caroline Garcia and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, setting up a super tiebreaker that narrowly went the way of Shibahara and Nishikori for a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(7) decision.
ย
Two tiebreakers were needed in Rojer's match with Robin Haase on the men's side. The Dutch duo did not need a super tiebreaker, however, by outlasting Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Mariano Navone of Argentina in a 7-6(3), 7-6(4) thriller.
ย
Table Tennis
Team USA's Amy Wang dropped a 4-2 decision to Adriana Diaz of Puerto Rico on Monday in the women's single round of 32. Set scores were 9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 14-12, 11-8. Wang had previously advanced out of the opening round with a 4-0 victory over Vanuatu's Priscilla Tommy. The Sewell, N.J. native is making her first-ever Olympics appearance.
ย
Wang and fellow Bruin Rachel Sung, also making her Olympics debut, return to action on Monday, Aug. 5, when the women's team table tennis event begins. Team USA opens up against Germany in the Round of 16 on Monday, Aug. 5, at 1 a.m. PT.
