September 19, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
DAVIS, Calif. – The UCLA women's volleyball team was unable to find a rhythm in its four-set defeat to UC Davis on Thursday night inside the University Credit Union Center.
Set scores were 24-26, 25-15, 21-25, and 22-25
The Bruins struggled from the service line, committing 21 service errors, tying the program record.
Junior outside hitter Cheridyn Leverette posted a season-high 17 kills (.400) and 19 points. Enjoying a breakout performance off the bench was graduate outside hitter Joy Umeh, racking up nine kills at a .292 clip.
UCLA had success setting its middle blockers with freshman Brooklyn Briscoe racking up eight kills (.312) on the night.
The hosts received a double-double (10 kills, 10 digs) from Jade Light and a good showing from their setter, Mia Starr, who handed out 32 assists. UC Davis achieved its first-ever victory over UCLA in the history of its program.
Leverette began the match with five early kills, yet the Bruins were unable to establish a significant lead in the opening set. UCLA responded with a 5-0 run, prompting a timeout from UC Davis. The hosts then regrouped and executed a 7-2 run to reclaim the lead. Graduate middle blocker Anna Dodson delivered consecutive kills to level the score at 24-24, but the Aggies secured the final two points to clinch the first set victory.
UCLA seemed to have found its rhythm when it built a 10-point lead in the second set after Briscoe put down five kills and a block. The Bruins hit a blistering .406 in the frame, recording 15 kills and two blocks on the defensive end.
Service errors began to significantly impact UCLA in the third set, with the team committing nine errors in this frame. Junior outside hitter Grayce Olson, who achieved a .471 hitting percentage and nine kills in the match, initiated the set with consecutive kills. Umeh then concluded a 3-0 run with a kill of her own. However, the Bruins' struggles at the service line hindered their momentum, and despite achieving a .393 hitting percentage in the set, UC Davis secured a 25-21 victory.
In the final frame, UCLA's hitting percentage fell into the negatives, while the Aggies capitalized on their momentum and the support of their home crowd to clinch their first victory in the history of the series.
UCLA is set to compete in its final nonconference match this Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. PT against California. The match will be available for streaming on ACC Network Extra.
