Bruins Draw With No. 16 Michigan, 3-3
September 21, 2024 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – In front of a packed Wallis Annenberg Stadium crowd the UCLA men's soccer program drew 3-3 with No. 16 Michigan on Saturday afternoon. Edrey Caceres and Sveinn Hauksson tallied goals for the Bruins in the tie.
UCLA (3-2-3, 1-1-1 Big Ten) had 12 shots with five coming on target in the game, while Michigan (5-0-3, 1-0-2 Big Ten) was held to six shots, with five coming on frame. Jose Contell led the way with three shots for the Bruins, while Sam Joseph made two saves in goal.
Michigan struck first in the 10th minute, to take a 1-0 lead. Jason Bucknor finished off a Matthew Fisher assist into the bottom right corner and past Joseph to put the Wolverines up.
UCLA responded just 10 minutes later. After solid linkup play down the right side between Tarun Karumanchi and Shakir Nixon, Karumanchi squared a ball across the face of goal from the endline. His cross was whipped dangerously towards the near post where a Michigan defender, while trying to get in the way of an onrushing Jose Contell, turned the ball into his own net, and the score was tied at 1-1.
Five minutes later the Bruins earned their first lead of the game. After UCLA had earned a corner in the 27th minute, Edrey Caceres stood over it. The graduate student then sent in a dangerous ball to the near post, which snuck past the Michigan keeper, putting UCLA up 2-1. The goal was Caceres' third of the season.
Michigan responded with a goal of their own, to tie things up again four minutes later. Michigan's Bryce Blevins picked up the ball just outside the 18-yard box, and then beat a defender, before taking a shot which hit off the inside of the post and went in, tying the score at 2-2 with 14 minutes to go in the half.
The scoring wasn't done yet, as UCLA added a third goal before the halftime break. Hauksson and Philip Naef, who had just come onto the pitch, provided a spark for the Bruins. Naef picked up the ball just outside the 18-yard box, cut inside and beat his man before finding Hauksson, a graduate student from Iceland, who buried it for his first collegiate goal.
The Bruins carried the 3-2 advantage into the halftime break. After the break, both squads looked for ways to either get back into the game, or seal the win, but neither side were able to carve out any clear-cut chances until after the 70th minute.
In the 78th minute UCLA's Pietro Grassi got a head onto a cross but his header that was headed towards the bottom left corner of the goal was well stopped by Isaiah Goldson in goal for the Wolverines, preserving the 3-2 lead for the Bruins.
The Wolverines then tallied their equalizer in the 81st minute. Jason Bucknor earned his second goal of the day after Beto Soto found space down the left side and crossed the ball across the goal, finding Bucknor, who slotted it home, tying the game at 3-3.
Neither squad could find a winner in the final nine minutes, and the sides finished with a point apiece.
