Bruins Beat Westmont 5-1
September 25, 2024 | Men's Soccer
The Bruins had 25 shots, with seven coming on frame on Tuesday night. Cam Wilkerson led the way with four shots, while Wyatt Nelson made two saves in goal in his third start of the season.
Nikolai Rojel found the net for the Bruins to break the deadlock in the 21st minute. Pietro Grassi broke down the defense with a through ball to Cam Wilkerson, who then sent a ball across the face of goal to a sliding Rojel who poked it past the keeper and into the net to put UCLA up 1-0. With the goal Rojel is now tied for the team lead with three goals on the season.
The Bruins could not add another before the halftime break, but just minutes into the second half, Jacob Diaz, who was making his first career start on Tuesday, put UCLA in front 2-0.
The sophomore from Torrance, California, picked up a ball in midfield, and noticed the Westmont keeper was off his line. He then hit the ball first time with his right foot, over the head of the keeper, and into the back of the net to give UCLA a 2-0 advantage in the 49th minute. The goal was also the first of his collegiate career.

Artem Vovk added the third goal for UCLA three minutes later. In his first collegiate appearance, the freshman was given a ball in the box by Diaz, dribbled past a defender and slotted the ball home into the side netting to put UCLA in front by three goals, 3-0.
Sveinn Hauksson bagged another for UCLA in the 67th minute. After some nice buildup play from Oshea Foster and Philip Naef, Naef cut a ball back across the 18-yard box, which found Hauksson. Hauksson then buried the ball into the back of the net to put the Bruins up 4-0.
Another first-time goal scorer tallied the fifth goal for the Bruins on Tuesday night. Sam Scott, making his second appearance of the season, was played through on goal by Youri Senden, whose pass broke through the Westmont backline, allowing Scott to take on a defender one-on-one. Scott dribbled past the defender and beat the onrushing keeper to put UCLA up 5-0 in the 69th minute.
Westmont tallied a goal late on in the 81st minute as the Bruins earned the 5-1 win on Tuesday. 10 different Bruins recorded either a goal or an assist in the win.
