No. 4 Softball Topples Oklahoma State, Charlotte in Florida

CLEARWATER, Fla. โ The No. 4 UCLA softball team recorded its first win over a ranked opponent this season on day one of the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational, defeating No. 9 Oklahoma State, 6-4, on Field 8 at the Eddie C. Moore Complex Friday.

The Bruins (7-0) mercy-ruled Charlotte, 10-0, in five innings later in the evening on Field 9, marking the team's sixth run-rule win of the year.

UCLA totaled 24 hits over the 12 innings, including 12 for extra bases on eight doubles, three home runs and one triple. In game one versus the Cowgirls (3-3), the Bruins tied the Clearwater Invitational record for most doubles in a single game with five.
"The double celebration motivated us," said infielder Jordan Woolery. "We wanted to see it in action and it was in action eight times today for the Bruins. (The celebration has) been created now."

Shortstop Aleena Garcia put on a defensive display contributing to eight infield groundouts by making plays on the run, backhands and throws across the field.

Game One โ UCLA 6, Oklahoma State 4
The Bruins answered Oklahoma State's two-run first inning with three runs on six hits, including four doubles in the bottom half. Savannah Pola doubled home Jessica Clements for UCLA's first score of the day. One batter later, Megan Grant sparked a string of three consecutive doubles, being followed by Seneca Curo and Kaniya Bragg to give the Bruins their first lead of the game.

UCLA's contest versus Oklahoma State marked the second game in a row the Bruins recorded five doubles after pouncing on UC Riverside in a 10-2 win last Sunday. Pola and Grant are tied for the team lead with four two-baggers through the first seven games of the year.

In total, five Bruins recorded two-hit performances against the Cowgirls: Garcia, Bragg, Clements, Grant and Pola.

Starting pitcher Kaitlyn Terry did not allow another hit for the rest of her 5.0-inning outing after surrendering her first two runs of the season. The Glendale, Ariz. native retired the side twice in the second and fifth innings and allowed a pair to reach via hit-by-pitch. Terry finished with five strikeouts and improved to 3-0 on the year.

Garcia padded the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a leadoff homer to straightaway center field for the first longball of her career. In the fifth, Grant provided two key insurance runs with her third homer of the season on another shot to center field.

UCLA's lead was cut to two, 6-4, by a two-run homer by Oklahoma State second baseman Rosie Davis in the sixth inning off relief pitcher Taylor Tinsley. Tinsley finished her 2.0-inning appearance with two strikeouts to help put away the win.

Game Two โ UCLA 10, Charlotte 0 (5 inn.)
UCLA's first inning doubles trend continued into the night with three more two-baggers to push out to an early 3-0 lead. Clements, Grant and Jordan Woolery all hit gap shots to reach second base.

The very next inning, Woolery launched her third homer of the year with a two-run blast to left center.

Bragg recorded her first career triple in the third inning and was advanced home on a sacrifice fly by Garcia to right field, extending the Bruins' lead to 6-0.

UCLA rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game into mercy-rule territory. Pinch hitter Kaitlyn Terry started the rally with a bunt single and moved into scoring position on a throwing error by the Niners' catcher. Terry advanced 60 feet on a deep flyout by Clements and was able to scramble home because of a mishandle on the throw by the Charlotte third baseman.

A walk and single brought up Grant who drove in two runs on her third double of the day, giving the Bruins a 9-0 lead. Liesl Osteen, making her first career plate appearance, recorded the first hit and RBI of her career to bring the score to its final tally at 10-0.
