Softball Rallies to Take Down Alabama, Beats Kentucky
February 15, 2025 | Softball
CLEARWATER, Fla. โ The No. 4 UCLA softball team scored six runs in the sixth inning to secure a 6-3 come-from-behind win over No. 14 Alabama on day two of the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational Saturday.
ย
The Bruins (9-0) defeated No. 23 Kentucky 3-1 earlier in the day on Field 3. UCLA's nine straight wins mark the team's best start since 2020 when the Bruins opened 15-0.
Freshman catcher Sofia Mujica drove in the game-winning runs with a bases-clearing, three-RBI double in the sixth inning against Alabama in the afternoon.
"It was truly a moment," Mujica said. "I told Coach I, 'Hey,ย Bruin Magic is going to happen.' I just trusted the process, stuck with our plan and looked for a zone."
ย
UCLA is hitting for a .363 batting average (37 hits) with 10 doubles, five home runs and one triple over four games at the Clearwater Invitational. Jordan Woolery leads the team with a .538 average (7-for-13) and two homers.
ย
Sophomore Kaitlyn Terry earned both wins against the Wildcats (6-4) and Crimson Tide (5-4), improving her tournament record to 3-0. Terry has allowed two earned runs and struck out 15 batters over a team-high 14.1 innings pitched.
ย
Game One โ UCLA 3, Kentucky 1
UCLA relied on the longball in game one against Kentucky with its first two runs coming by way of solo shots by Jordan Woolery and Savannah Pola in the first and third innings, respectively.
ย
Freshman starting pitcher Addisen Fisher danced around trouble in each of the first two frames of her 3.0-inning outing. Right fielder Megan Grant caught the second out in the top of the first and doubled off a runner who left early at second base. In the second inning, Fisher allowed a walk and single with two outs before punching out the final batter on a called strike three.
ย
Fisher allowed a triple to start the top of the fourth and was relieved by sophomore Terry. The left-hander from Arizona struck out each of the first two batters she faced on seven pitches, and was one out away from stranding the runner on third before a single by Lauryn Borzilleri cut the lead to 2-1.
ย
The Bruins responded with a run in the next half inning. Two straight walks put a runner in scoring position for third baseman Kaniya Bragg who flew out to center field on a ball deep enough for pinch runner Liesl Osteen tagged up from second base. However, the Wildcats' cut-off man booted the ball into left field to Allie Blum who gunned down Osteen trying to score. UCLA's very next batter Aleena Garcia hammered a single up the middle to score Curo and restore the two-run lead.
ย
Kentucky loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning on a hit-by-pitch, a throwing error by Terry to second base and single. Terry buckled down with back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam.
ย
Game Two โ UCLA 6, Alabama 3
UCLA surmounted a 3-0 deficit with six runs off four hits, three walks and a fielding error in the sixth inning. The Bruins hit around the around order and scored all six off starter Jocelyn Briski who totaled 41 pitches.
ย
Rylee Slimp led off the sixth with a walk and was moved over to second by Jessica Clements on a bunt. Clements was able to reach herself, evading a tag by Alabama first baseman Alexis Pupillo. Back-to-back hard-hit singles by Pola up the middle and Woolery through the left side each scored a run, cutting the lead to one at 3-2.
ย
With runners on second and third and two outs, Curo worked a full-count walk to load the bases and bring up Garcia. The freshman from Pico Rivera, Calif. battled back from a 1-2 count and walked to bring home the game-tying run. Mujica stepped to the plate next with bases full of Bruins. Mujica, on UCLA's third straight full count, cleared the pillows with a three-RBI double to center field to take the lead.
ย
Terry retired six of the final seven batters she faced to secure the win. Slimp and Woolery both finished the game with two hits.
