February 23, 2025 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. โ The No. 4 UCLA softball team fell to No. 11 Duke, 1-0, in a pitchers' duel at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Big League Dreams Sports Park Sunday morning.
ย
The Bruins (14-2) mustered only three hits off Blue Devils (13-3) ace Cassidy Curd who earned her fifth win of the year. UCLA starting pitcher Taylor Tinsley matched Curd every inning until the top of the seventh. Former Bruin and current Duke third baseman Thessa Malau'ulu began the rally with a double into the left center gap.
ย
After a Tinsley strikeout, Duke's Linh Le drove in Malau'ulu for the go-ahead run with a bloop infield single, beating second baseman Savannah Pola's throw home.
ย
Tinsley allowed just four hits, struck out seven and did not walk a batter in her complete-game outing. She retired 10 straight batters between the first and fourth innings. Tinsley's record now sits at 2-1 with a 2.55 ERA.
ย
UCLA's best chance to score came in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Jordan Woolery rocketed her second double of the tournament to right field. Her pinch runner, Aleena Garcia, advanced to third base on a wild pitch. A walk to the next batter, Kaniya Bragg, put two aboard with nobody out. The next two Bruins โ Jessica Clements and Rylee Slimp โ went down on strikes and a fly out to left, respectively.
ย
The Bruins also left two on base the previous inning in the fifth. Slimp led off the frame with a single to center field and Kaitlyn Terry walked on nine pitches.
ย
Tinsley and the UCLA defense worked its way out of major jam in the top of the fifth. Duke opened the inning with an infield single and reached on a throwing error by Tinsley. A sacrifice bunt by Jada Baker put two runners in scoring position and one out. Freshman Kaniya Bragg, playing in front of the bag at third base, laid out full extension to snag a line drive to her left to keep the ballgame scoreless. Tinsley extinguished the threat with a strikeout on three pitches.
ย
Slimp also made a crucial play in left field in the top of the sixth to rob the Blue Devils' Ana Gold of a two-run homer.
