No. 4 Softball Splits on Day One at Judi Garman Classic
February 27, 2025 | Softball
FULLERTON, Calif. โ The No. 4 UCLA softball team was outlasted in a pitchers' duel versus No. 5 LSU, falling 2-1 in its first game at the Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field on Thursday. The Bruins (15-3) bounced back to win game two versus Notre Dame, 7-2, behind a three-homer effort.
ย
"The whole preseason is about learning more about ourselves, and I got to learn about a lot of new Bruins," The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez said postgame. "There are great teaching moments. This is a very coachable group. We've got great energy. We're not perfect yet (and) we don't need to be. Our goal is to be our best at the end and we're facing some really great opponents. It's giving us a really good opportunity to find out where we are in the month of February.
ย
"I believe the ability to come back and play a game that's not as hyped is even more impressive because that game easily could have gotten away from us. โฆ I'm impressed with our ability to finish it out, and we have a lot of different ways we can win ballgames."
ย
Left-handed pitcher Kaitlyn Terry earned the start against the Tigers (15-0) and was handed her second loss of the year after allowing two runs over 6.0 innings. LSU ace Sydney Berzon outdueled Terry with just one run given up on a sacrifice fly in a complete-game victory.
ย
UCLA and LSU went scoreless into the top of the sixth before the Tigers broke through with their two runs. LSU pieced together three straight one-out singles โ one each by Jaila Lassiter, Macy Begeron and Tori Edwards โ to score the first tally. A wild pitch and walk loaded the bases for Sierra Daniel who drove in the last run on the fourth single of the inning.
ย
The Bruins answered back in the bottom half with two singles off the bats of Jessica Clements and Savannah Pola, putting the team's first runner into scoring position of the ballgame. Junior infielder Jordan Woolery cut the LSU lead to just one with a sacrifice fly to center field.
ย
UCLA had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the seventh after Kaniya Bragg led off the inning with a double into the left center gap. However, three consecutive plays to third base โ two 5-3 groundouts and a lineout โ halted the UCLA rally.
ย
Bragg and Clements were the only Bruins to record two hits in game one and parlayed their success into game two versus Notre Dame, each homering for the first time in a UCLA uniform.
ย
Bragg scratched the first run across the board in the second inning against the Fighting Irish (8-8) with a solo shot to left field for the first longball of her collegiate career. Notre Dame denied UCLA starting pitcher Jada Cecil of a shutdown inning with a go-ahead two-run homer to left field by Addison Amaral. Inouye-Perez subbed in freshman pitcher Addisen Fisher to relieve Cecil. Fisher prevented any more damage with 4.2 scoreless innings and three strikeouts to finish the game.
ย
UCLA tacked on five more in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach. Singles by Rylee Slimp and Seneca Curo to start the inning set the table for Terry, who was playing right field in game two. Terry delivered a two-RBI single into center field. The next batter, Clements, smacked a 1-1 delivery deep to right field for the first homer of the inning and her first since transferring to UCLA to extend the lead to 5-2.
ย
Pola notched the Bruins' third straight hit with another single into center to bring Woolery to the plate. Woolery hit deep drive to opposite field, and the right fielder playing the ball crashed into the wall allowing UCLA's first baseman to wheel into third base with her second triple of the season.
ย
Grant was the last Bruin to leave the yard, hitting a ball ~250 feet for her fourth homer of the year.
