No. 24 UCLA Dominates Purdue, 16-3, to Complete Series Sweep

March 30, 2025 | Baseball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 24-ranked UCLA baseball team completed its three-game sweep over Purdue with an emphatic 16-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Alexander Field.

With this victory, UCLA (22-5, 10-2 Big Ten) has achieved its best 27-game start to a season since 2010, when the team won 51 games—just one short of the program's all-time record—and finished as the national runner-up.

UCLA is now tied with Iowa atop the Big Ten standings after winning its fourth consecutive conference series. The Bruins totaled 37 runs in the series, matching their tally from opening weekend against Cal Poly (Feb. 14-16).

The 16-run explosion was bolstered by seven multi-hit performances at the plate from UCLA starters. Mulivai Levu was the brightest of the bunch, recording his second consecutive four-hit day. UCLA's first baseman went 4-for-6 with a home run and five RBI on the afternoon, capping an incredible weekend where he slashed .615/.706/.923.

Dean West, Roch Cholowsky, and AJ Salgado each had three-hit performances, while Roman Martin, Payton Brennan, and Phoenix Call contributed with two hits apiece.

Salgado also swung a hot bat over the weekend, equaling Levu with eight hits during the three-game set.

As a team, UCLA hit .385 with 15 extra-base hits, including eight doubles and six home runs.

In its first trip to the plate, the top three in the UCLA batting order strung together three consecutive hits to ignite a three-run inning. West and Cholowsky set the table with a pair of knocks before Levu brought them both home with a line drive into center field, opening the scoring. Brennan then brought UCLA's first baseman around to score with an RBI groundout to cap the three-run frame.

The Bruins added to their lead with two more runs in the third inning. Cholowsky was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then Levu followed with his second hit of the game. Martin smoked a base hit up the middle to plate the two base runners, extending UCLA's lead to five.

The Bruins' offensive onslaught continued in the top of the fourth inning, rallying for five more runs. Purdue turned to its closer, Avery Cook, after starting pitcher Cole Van Assen surrendered a leadoff hit to Call. However, Cook was greeted with back-to-back RBI doubles from West and Levu. Martin kept the momentum going with another run-scoring base hit, and Brennan capped off the inning with a massive 434-foot home run over the center field wall to make it a double-digit advantage.

Cook, who had not allowed a run prior to the weekend, was tagged for four runs in the fourth inning.

Purdue scored twice in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to eight. This brought an end to Landon Stump's day, and Cal Randall was the next hurler to toe the rubber.

Stump (3-0) delivered another solid outing to grab his third win of the campaign, logging five innings while allowing just two runs.

UCLA erupted for six more runs in the eighth inning to activate the mercy rule. Levu highlighted the five-hit, six-run rally with an opposite-field homer, his ninth of the season.

Freshmen Easton Hawk and Wylan Moss tossed the seventh and eighth innings respectively to secure the series finale for UCLA on the mound.

The Bruins will return to Jackie Robinson Stadium to host Pepperdine on Tuesday, April 1 at 6 p.m. PT to begin a nine-game homestand. The game will be available to watch on B1G+.
