No. 6 Softball Tames Lions, 11-1, on Brisk Evening at Easton

March 06, 2025 | Softball

LOS ANGELES – The No. 6 UCLA softball team needed just six hits to mercy rule LMU, 11-1, in five innings in a non-conference contest at Easton Stadium on Thursday night.

Three of the Bruins' (19-4) six base hits left the yard. Megan Grant, Jordan Woolery and Maggie Daniel all homered in the contest. UCLA drew 10 total free passes with six walks and four hit-by-pitches. Play started with rain showers which lasted through the first two innings while the temperature topped at 46 degrees.

"It feels like (the top of the order) makes it easy for me getting on base all the time," Grant said postgame. "It's crazy what they have been doing getting on base whether it be hits or walks. Coach Lisa (Fernandez) has been talking about us getting RBIs from walks. My job feels a lot easier and it's less pressure on me. It allows me to do what I've been training for."

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Kaitlyn Terry held the Lions (8-15) in check on offense, taking a perfect game into the fifth inning before allowing a walk and RBI base hit to close her bid.

Terry retired the first nine batters she faced on just 36 pitches while striking out four in that span. The Glendale, Ariz. native finished her fifth complete-game outing of the season with six strikeouts and dropped her earned run average to a team-leading 1.47. Terry's record improves to 9-3 on the season.

The first of UCLA's three homers came off the bat of Grant in the first inning. A single by Savannah Pola and full-count walk to Woolery set the stage for Grant who hit a liner over the right field wall to spot the Bruins an early 3-0 lead. Grant has now homered in three consecutive games dating back to UCLA's two games versus Weber State and No. 12 Arizona last week at the Judi Garman Classic.

Daniel led off the next bottom half inning by golfing a 1-0 delivery out to left field for her second home run of the season. One out later, Jessica Clements recorded a base hit to left field and Pola followed with a base-on-balls to bring Woolery to the plate. The UCLA slugger hit the Bruins' second three-run shot of the game with a drive to straightaway center to extend the lead to 7-0. With the homer, Woolery ties her previous season high of 10 set during both her freshman and sophomore years just 23 games into this season.

Woolery paces UCLA in batting average (.448), runs batted in (36), slugging percentage (1.045).

UCLA is averaging 1.57 home runs per game which is on pace for its best mark since its 2010 NCAA title season when the Bruins set the program record for home runs (108).

"We put the work in and we watched each other (during practice and games)," Grant said. "Everyone can be a threat in the lineup, one through nine. It doesn't really matter. Everyone has the ability to take it out of the park. It's kind of freeing in a sense. You can just go up there."

Five free passes – three walks and two hit-by-pitches – followed Woolery's blast to score two more runs in the second. Freshman Kaniya Bragg was hit by a pitch for the second time of the game. Bragg leads the team with 10 hit-by-pitches this season and is seven shy of tying the UCLA single-season record of 17 set by Crissy Buck in 2002. With the bases loaded, Daniel was hit-by-pitch Seneca Curo drew a full-count walk in back-to-back at-bats to push the lead to 9-0.

Clements put a bookend to the eight-run second inning with a two-RBI single up the middle. The graduate transfer leads UCLA with 34 hits and 27 runs scored this season.

LMU second baseman Sakora Harvell was the owner of the Lions' only hit and RBI of the game. Lindsay O'Dell started the game for LMU and earned the loss, lasting only 1.1 innings.
