Bruins Rally for Extra Innings Win Over Maryland in Big Ten Debut, 12-6
March 07, 2025 | Baseball
The thrilling come-from-behind effort gives UCLA (11-3, 1-0 Big Ten) its first-ever Big Ten Conference win.
With the Bruins down to their final out and trailing by two runs, Roch Cholowsky provided the biggest swing of the game, blasting a three-run home run to give UCLA the improbable lead.
Maryland (7-6, 0-1 Big Ten) tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth. However, the Bruins, riding the momentum from the previous inning, exploded for six runs in the top of the 10th to secure a victory in their Big Ten debut.
Mulivai Levu delivered the finishing blow with his 10th inning grand slam to put the game out of reach.
Cholowsky collected four RBI, drew three walks, and scored a pair of runs in his 1-for-3 performance. His home run was his sixth on the year.
UCLA's bullpen impressed yet again, allowing just three hits and two runs in a total of 5.0 innings pitched. Wylan Moss earned his first collegiate win after tossing 1.2 innings in relief. Chris Grothues, Jack O'Connor, and Justin Lee all played a crucial role in keeping Maryland's prolific offense in check, surrendering just one run in a combined 3.1 innings.
Roman Martin, Cashel Dugger, and Phoenix Call enjoyed multi-hit days at the plate.
Alex Calarco's two-run homer propelled the Terrapins to an early lead after the first inning.
Following Dean West's single in the game's opening at-bat, UCLA went hitless until Cameron Kim smacked a line drive to left field in the top of the fifth.
After a shaky first inning, Cody Delvecchio found his rhythm and kept the hosts scoreless for the next three innings. However, Maryland extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Aden Hill launched a solo home run, followed by a double that later scored on a wild pitch, resulting in a two-run inning that doubled the Terrapins' lead.
The hosts used a bases-loaded walk to add another run in the sixth, making it a 5-0 ballgame.
The Bruins' offense came to life in the seventh when they cut the deficit to two. A leadoff walk from Levu and a double from Martin set the table for Jarrod Hocking, who slapped a single up the middle to plate UCLA's first run of the game. In a pinch-hit appearance, Blake Balsz beat out a double-play ball that allowed Martin to score. Call then delivered a clutch two-out RBI double that nestled into the left field corner, capping a three-run seventh inning.
More importantly, the rally chased Maryland's starting pitcher, Kyle McCoy, out of the contest. The Terrapins' left-hander kept the Bruins off balance, striking out eight batters and surrendering just two hits through six scoreless innings. He finally ran into trouble with one out in the seventh, which forced Maryland to make a call to the bullpen.
With the Bruins trailing by two, the drama intensified in the top of the ninth as Dugger and West reached base for Cholowsky. Down to their final out, Cholowsky delivered the biggest swing of the night, crushing a 1-1 fastball over the left-center field wall for a three-run homer, giving UCLA the lead.
Maryland answered, however, when Chris Hacopian hit a solo home run, tying the game at 6-6 and sending it into extra innings.
UCLA exploded for six runs, all with two outs, to take a commanding lead in the top of the 10th. After back-to-back strikeouts to start the inning, Balsz worked a walk to give the Bruins a base runner.
With UCLA having lost its designated hitter in the previous inning, Moss stepped up for his first college at-bat. The Mater Dei product channeled his high school form, lacing a single up the middle to keep the inning alive.
Call gave the Bruins the go-ahead run when his ground ball navigated its way through the infield, scoring Balsz from second base. A walk from West loaded the bases, then Cholowsky drew another free pass to make it an 8-6 lead.
The game was put on ice when Levu drove a fastball over the left-field wall that clocked in at 108 miles-per-hour off the bat for a grand slam. This was UCLA's fourth grand slam of the season.
In his eighth appearance of the season, Lee set the Terrapins down in order to clinch the victory for UCLA.
The Bruins continue the series against Maryland tomorrow at 11 a.m. PT (2 p.m. ET). Ian May will get the start for UCLA. The game will be available for viewing on B1G+.
