Men's Tennis Takes Down No. 21 Michigan 5-0

April 11, 2025 | Men's Tennis

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The UCLA men's tennis team rolled to a 5-0 victory against No. 21 Michigan in Big Ten Conference action Friday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Alexander Hoogmartens, Giacomo Revelli, clincher Gianluca Ballotta and Rudy Quan earned singles wins in order for the Bruins (10-8, 8-2 in Big Ten play). Ballotta and Quan prevailed simultaneously, with Ballotta sneaking in first for the deciding point. The Wolverines (14-9, 8-3) earned one doubles victory on the day.

UCLA jumped out to 3-0 leads on Courts 1 and 3 in doubles play. Wolverines Alex Cairo and Will Cooksey held for the next game up top, but Hoogmartens and Revelli seized the rest for a 6-1 result. The all-senior pair of Bruins has won each of its past three matches and is 6-2 in dual-match play. Mert Oral and Bjorn Swenson pulled Michigan level on Court 2, where the tandem downed Spencer Johnson โ€“ who was playing in his first match since Feb. 2 โ€“ and Rudy Quan by a 6-1 score.

In the difference-making match, Ballotta and Emon van Loben Sels broke the serve of Patorn Hanchaikul/Nicholas Steiglehner for 5-3 before holding for their eighth win in nine tries โ€“ and third clincher.

UCLA took all six singles first sets and decisions were soon made on the back courts. The Bruins doubled their lead on Court 4, as Hoogmartens picked up his team-high 12th dual-match singles victory with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Steiglehner. Moments later, Revelli finished off Oral by a 6-2, 6-3 margin on Court 6.

With Ballotta, Quan and van Loben Sels each a game away from victory, it was Ballotta who delivered the clincher โ€“ his first of 2025. The junior from Lima, Peru beat Cairo 6-3, 6-2 on Court 5. Seconds later, No. 34 Quan knocked off No. 80 Cooksey 6-3, 6-3 on Court 1 for his sixth ranked win of the season.
