No. 8 Softball Secures Series Sweep with 6-5 Win Against Washington
April 13, 2025 | Softball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 8-ranked UCLA softball team homered three times to defeat Washington, 6-5, and secure a Big Ten Conference series sweep in front of a sold-out crowd at Easton Stadium Sunday afternoon.
ย
"(The fans) make a really big difference," said UCLA senior Savannah Pola. "Their energy plays a big part in our energy and flow and how we flow together. I think it's really exciting that a lot of people are coming out to see us."
ย
The Bruins (40-5, 12-1 Big Ten), who extend their winning streak to 12 games, hit three home runs and totaled eight base knocks in the matinee. Junior first baseman Megan Grant homered for a fourth straight game to extend her national lead to 22 on the season. Grant also is tops in NCAA Division I with 68 runs batted in. Her 22 home runs are tied for fourth-most in UCLA single-season history, and the most by a Bruin since B.B. Bates in 2014 (25).
ย
Grant followed up her NFCA National Player of the Week performance by going 6-for-9 at the plate with five home runs, including two grand slams, and 11 RBIs this week.
ย
As a team, UCLA has homered 75 times this season for an average of 1.66 per game.
ย
Sophomore left-hander Kaitlyn Terry went 3.0 innings and surrendered five runs off four hits in her start against the Huskies (29-12, 7-5 Big Ten). Freshman Addisen Fisher replaced Terry in the fourth and allowed one run while striking out three in her 4.0-inning outing. Fisher improved her record to a flawless 13-0. She ranks second among all freshmen in the country in wins and is the only rookie to sport an undefeated record (min. 47.0 IP).
ย
UCLA got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first thanks to a pair of wild pitches. Pola singled through the right side to start the rally. Junior third baseman Jordan Woolery followed Pola with another single. The first of two wild pitches in Grant's at-bat advanced the pair of baserunners into scoring position. Washington catcher Jadyn Glab got out of her crouch for the next pitch and signaled to Huskies starting pitcher Rylee Rehbein for an intentional walk. Rehbein's toss home went wild and flew to the backstop, allowing Pola to race home and score the game's first run. Washington reliever Stevie Hansen entered the game and recorded two outs with the bases loaded to prevent further damage.
ย
The Huskies evened the score, 1-1, the next half inning with an RBI single by Riley Peschek to score Alycia Flores who doubled to lead off the frame.
ย
UCLA struck for three more runs in the bottom of the third off a pair of bombs by Grant and redshirt sophomore designated player Alexis Ramirez. Grant belted the first homer, a solo home run on a 75.2 mile per hour exit velocity to the batting cages in right-center field. Ramirez' second homer of the year was a two-run line shot out to left field, extending the Bruins' lead to 4-1.
ย
Washington came close gaining its first lead in the series in top of the fourth. The Huskies loaded the bases with back-to-back base hits and a hit-by-pitch. Terry hit a second straight batter, cutting UCLA's lead to 4-2. The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez went to the bullpen to bring in the freshman Fisher who walked in a second run on four straight pitches against the first batter she faced. After a strikeout to Washington's No. 9 hitter, Ava Carroll put a charge into a ball to deep center field that was caught by a leaping Jessica Clements. Alycia Flores tagged up from third base on the play to score on the sacrifice fly, tying the score at 4-4.
ย
Pola put the Bruins up for good in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homer off the right field foul pole for her eighth blast of the year. Pola leads the team this season with a .453 batting average, 68 hits and 57 runs scored.
ย
Fisher was dominant in her first two full innings in the fifth and sixth, sending Washington down in order twice to preserve the slim lead.
ย
Terry, who moved out to right field after her work in the circle, provided her reliever with additional run support in the bottom of the sixth. The lefty led off the inning with a single up the middle and stole second base on the very next pitch. Terry took off for third on the next delivery for another stolen base. Washington third baseman Giselle Alvarez was late for Glab's throw down as it sailed into the outfield and allowed Terry to score easily.
ย
Fisher closed the game with a groundout to Woolery at third base after surrendering a solo shot to Alexis DeBoer.
